Rare pictures of the U.S. Navy taken during the Spanish-American war have been unearthed after being found hidden away in storage by military archivists. A box, containing about 150 original glass plate photographs, was uncovered at the Naval History and Heritage Command in Washington DC, featuring images of all aspects of the war from logistics to diplomacy. They were only brought to light again when the photo archive team was preparing for a major renovation and archivists Dave Colamaria and Jon Roscoe stumbled across the pictures.

“That’s what it said to me. Someone said “an early example of American Imperialism” and you just want to say “Yeah, the UK would never do that”. They had a huge empire at one time - guy’s an idiot.”

One idiot even said that the trouble in Ukraine is an example of “US Imperialism”

I guess if you say “US Imperialism” in some circles, it gives you credibility. Some circles being Communist circles....

In the link article, anyone notice in the background of the sixth picture of the Suez Canal where the Spanish fleet is you can see in the distance a huge 3 stack luxury liner? It looks to have the shape of a White Star Line liner. Look closely.

Yup. You might have something there. However, most of the White Star line photos of the period show either two stacks or four. Could it be the German liner “Emperator”? Mast configuration may be different. Hard to tell if it’s masking another ship beyond.

My aunt’s husband gave my son a knife his Grandfather carrier in the Spanish American War. It’s the centerpiece of his collection.

Pardon...make that Imperator. And, on second glance, it may not be the Imperator.

Yea, and the next time the Brits are threatened with invasion, maybe the people of the USA wont be sending their personal firearms to them.

Of course those places were better off under our jurisdiction.

However, the US did not become better off by becoming a colonial power. Totally UN-American. ....And IMNVHO, not constitutional, either.

Wow, it is amazing that of anybody the British are bashing America for imperialism. We are going to spend the next century fighting wars over Europe’s screw ups. Can you say Trans-Jordan, boys and girls. How about Iraq or all of Africa.
