Sara Warren said Fort Collins police took her Ruger SR9, which she uses for personal protection in her job as a maid when visiting clients homes, after an accident required her to be transported to the hospital.
The police want to give it back, but a new universal background check law passed last year amid much controversy requires a Federal Firearms License background check.
Fort Collins police dont have an FFL holder on staff.
We had an opinion from our city attorney and district attorney not to return firearms without a (Federal Firearms License) check, and we dont have an FFL person in our office, Fort Collins deputy chief Jim Szakmeister told the Loveland Reporter Herald.
The police have hit on a one-time solution and are arranging for Warren and others in a similar situation to meet officers at a local outdoor store with an FFL license. Szakmeister told the newspaper hes not sure who will pay for the background checks.
Were working on a long-term solution, he said. The greatest solution would be for the legislators to put in a police exemption. Otherwise were probably going to have to get an FFL and find someone in the office willing to work in that capacity.

hire a local gun shop operator until pd can get their own.
problem solved.
Methinks the police do not want to solve the problem they have created.
Options (beyond their desire that citizens be disarmed and helpless):
1) The police desire to sell her property or want her gun for themselves;
2) The police have already sold her gun or allowed it to be stolen (perhaps the SN is already ground off for use as a drop gun);
3) Union featherbedding — they want $150,000 per year in extra funding for an in-house FFL holder, to check the occasional item. Will make excuses why paying a reputable business $500 a year wouldn’t work. Like Obama attacking WWII veterans during “sequestration”, they are abusing this woman to get what they want.
This needs an independent investigation. Who is in charge of Ft. Collings, CO PD and government?
