SALT LAKE CITY, International Airport on Wednesday leading to the cancellations of several flights.
Eleven inbound planes were struck and maintenance teams are working to determine the exact extent of the damage. One United Airlines flight was hit and the rest of the planes were all arriving Delta flights.
"I think its reassuring to know that the airlines do look at the aircraft after a mention is made that there could have been a lightning strike and that they can withstand it," Salt Lake International Airport spokeswoman Barbara Gann told ABC 4.
Even though the strikes likely occurred while the planes were occupied, Gann said it was unlikely that passengers noticed. All of the strikes happened within two hours of each other.
"It is scary to hear that lightning strikes happen, but what I take away from it, what I think is important to know is that it happens it is not uncommon, although it is unusual to have this many in one day, but everything's fine," said Gann.
Lessons Learned So Far In Life:
1. Trailer parks are tornado magnets.
2. Delta Airlines planes are lightening magnets.

ZOT!
In after the Zot.
I remember driving to Sierra Vista a couple of decades ago. After leaving the interstate I saw much the same, but it was a sideways lightning bolt that stretched horizontally across the sky for what looked like miles before it hit earth.
Different conductivities and how and where the person (or equipment inside for that matter) touches the cage can cause problems as well as radiated high field strength fields that are generated. It is not all necessarily a Faraday cage. Rubber seals around back and front doors, windows, external antennas, etc.
It’s good to know! However, we were on an Eva flight landing in Taipei several years ago. We had reached to point in the landing procedure where all the window shades had been put up and a flash of light made the interior light up way stronger than the overhead lights. When we landed, the rain was a deluge. It made us nervous boarding the next leg of our trip.
