Iranian Submarine Lost While Practicing To Sink U.S. Aircraft Carrier
Strategy Page ^ | May 11, 2014

In the Persian Gulf there are rumors that one of Iran's Ghadir mini-subs sank while practicing tactics for attacking an American Nimitz class carrier.

It was believed that a recently built two-thirds replica of an American Nimitz class aircraft carrier would be towed out so the Ghadir could get some experience in how to approach such a large ship and launch torpedoes at it.

The rumored loss of a Ghadir was accompanied by talk of some new stealth technology on the Ghadir. That is probably just rumor as the small size of the Ghadir already confers a substantial amount of stealthiness.

This purported stealth technology is supposed to explain why Iranian salvage ships are not out looking for the sunken Ghadir as that activity would tell foreigners where, approximately, the sub went down.

The captain’s last words: “Ached....open the hatch and see how close we are to the target.”

You have to ask yourself: Do I want to be in s sub run by a bunch of crazy muzzie camel jocks?

Given the choice between that and strapping on a vest made of explosives . . . maybe the single digit survival rate is attractive.

Nahh. My bet is screwed up the rule for opening the hatch.
Add the descents + ascents divide by 2. If there is 1 left over don't open the hatch.

Sitting on the bottom full of water is pretty stealthy.

Question: Why does the New Iranian navy have glass bottom boats?

The Iranians would love to sink an American Carrier, regardless of the cost to the crews. It would be a SHTF scenario on the scale of Pearl Harbor.

Yeah, well they better not sink one of our carriers, because if they did, Obama would retaliate by expressing deep concern.

That’s what happens when you open a window to get some air even though there was a screen to keep out fish.

Well, them there old-fashioned German WWII “short range diesel boats” ended up sinking quite a few US ships sailing ....... right offshore of Galveston carrying Houston ship channel oil.

Seems its not too much of a stretch to see them shooting a couple of modern (Russian/Chinese/NK/Cuban/ex-Ukrainian) modern self-guiding high-speed torpedoes at a few US escorts and tankers a few miles off of the coast of Iran.

To stop a tanker with only one propeller attached to a very large, very noisy direct drive diesel engine that is VERY NOISY all you have to is push a button. To sink a US escort that can’t use sonar because of a VERY NOISY tanker close aboard all you need is two torpedoes. And one button.

Now think about what you just said for a minute. The Iranian subs are battery-powered. That means underwater speed & endurance are both pretty LOW. A Nimitz-class aircraft carrier doing flight ops is pushing 30 knots through the water — far faster than any battery powered sub can go, even in a sprint.

So what is the tactic? Sit on the bottom like a manned mine. On detecting a US warship coming toward you you rise to periscope depth (if that is how they acquire targets. Then launch torpedoes if in range.

These things are not a serious threat to run down even a merchant ship while submerged.

Its rumored stealth technology involves diving below test depth. Top that, Yankee devils!
