Dolphins fine and suspend player for tweeting negative comment about Michael Sam

When Miami Dolphins safety Don Jones tweeted "horrible" in regards to Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend on ESPN after being drafted by the St. Louis Rams on Saturday, it wasn't a moment the NFL, Sam, the Dolphins or anyone wanted.

But make no mistake, it allowed the NFL an opportunity to send a strong message: If you have public and negative comments about Sam and his sexuality, you will be punished and shamed.

Jones, a second-year strong safety who had 10 tackles in 16 games last year, tweeted "omg" right after ESPN showed Sam's reaction to being drafted. According to thephinsider.com, when asked on Twitter if he was referring to Sam kissing his boyfriend, Jones tweeted, "horrible."

The Dolphins and NFL aren't going to mess around with this type of thing. Jones was fined and suspended from all team activities until he completes educational training for his Twitter comments. The Dolphins didn't put this off. On a relatively quiet Sunday around the NFL, the Dolphins announced the punishment, put out a statement from coach Joe Philbin and an apology from Jones:

if anyone doesn't appreciate the NFL and the Miami Dolphins support of the queer gestapo, please let them know that players still have free speech rights in America.

I don’t care for the NFL’s stance, but this has nothing to do with free speech.

The play is free to say what he wants.

His employer is free to hold the player accountable.

Yet NO outrage when people were trashing Tim Tebow for his Christian beliefs..OK I understand it now, trash a Conservative Christian, fine and dandy..dare say ANYTHING negative about a fruitcake who was kissing his “Boyfriend” on TV (which thank God I did NOT see otherwise I would have hurled)..that person gets trashed in the media..free speech in America is NOT dead, as long as your trashing the ones the media despises

I’ve seen this movie before. Once the Bobbitt story broke, the p word was everywhere. Now explocit homo acts will be in our faces starting with espn and Drudge, ending with billboards, children’s cartoons and end cap placements at Target

The Amish may have a point.

I think it’s the pinheads in the NFL front office who are suffering from concussions and not the players. The jerks at the NFL need to grow up. This is still America and we still have a Bill of Rights. The First Amendment was not suspended just because a moron from Kenya went through the evolutionary process and is now having a love affair with “the first openly gay” homosexuals.

THIS IS THE NEW McCARTHYISM

(with the perrverted meaning of the phrase)

“Are you now, or have you ever been a member of an anti-gay hate group?”

McCarthyism is used to mean an unfair persecution of communist memebers of Hollywood when it in reallity was the ACTUAL investigation of REAL communists.

I'm now considering extending that ban to television viewing.

I'd say 'ef 'em, but they'd probably enjoy it.

Read The Turner Diaries. It is controversial and disgusting to some but it reads like it could have been written yesterday with regard to this "hate speech" meme.

The swift reaction by the Dolphins makes me suspicious that the league planned and conspired the whole scenario for drafting Sam.

I understand the concept. The legacy media and large corporations are acting as agents of the government to stop free speech. It’s more than this one incident, too. I can understand action for opposing Sam being drafted, but this was a reaction to that disgusting kiss.

I’m not sure tweeting that you find public personal displays of affection offensive (which is all he did - he didn’t mention anything about teh gay aspect) would be a violation of his player contract. The union should go to bat for him here.

I wish every player would express outrage. Are they going to suspend every player? Accepting a gay being allowed a job is one thing. But now they are expecting players to accept homo behavior itself. There is a big difference.

Public displays like men kissing men?

The NFL is taking a political stance and telling their employees that they must take the same stance or shut up. This is more in line with unionism than freedom.

“And when every business does it, all employees are silenced. Isn’t that the equivalent of no freedom of speech?”

You are wading into some deep waters here. When all employers make demands of their employees, what are the options?

Capitulate
Seek relief via governmental regulation
Unionize

On this site, in regard to many other employer/employee relations, I have frequently been told, it’s up to the employee to deal with the demands, or find another position.

What would you suggest? Do you have another option?

I’m with you. I thought it was disgusting. Made me want to barf. But I’m not going to say that on my facebook page. Why? Because my employer sees that, and I’m not quite sure what influence the gay mafia has with my employer.

Better safe than sorry.

And so it begins....the NFL players cannot comment about or criticise or even joke about a gay player in their ranks. But let me tell you, players will voice their opinions on the field. What happens when they block, tackle, hit extra hard on the field if you know what I mean. Michael Sam better be one tough bi..ch, because he is gonna feel some pain. The NFL and Sam should just suck it up....oh wait....sorry, can’t say that. If the NFL is gonna ban speech in this case what is next. There are gonna be a lot of players going to rehab training programs.
