Jeeze, I’m getting bummed out catching up on the News here. I’ll get on updates in the AM. Must get some sleep now.

Sad News - Patricia Petty: Patricia Petty, wife of Maurice Petty and sister-in-law to Richard Petty, passed away Sunday, May 11. Richard Petty offered the following statement: “We all love Patricia. She was another cornerstone in the Petty family and was always there for Maurice and allowed us to do what we loved to do. She was just another special part of the family. We’ll miss her and give our love and support to Maurice and his family at this time.”(Richard Petty Motorsport)(5-12-2014)

Sad News - Wilbur Rakestraw: In the early years of stock car racing, Wilbur Rakestraw of Paulding County (GA) was one of the stars of Atlanta-area tracks such as Lakewood Speedway and the Dallas Speed Bowl. He also was well-known on the NASCAR circuit now known as Sprint Cup and on NASCAR’s old Convertible Series. Rakestraw, who died Wednesday at age 85 of congestive heart failure, was among the drivers who made the transition from the old beach course at Daytona to the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway. He ran the first three Daytona 500s as well as the first race at the track now known at Atlanta Motor Speedway, finishing 11th. Rakestraw ran 30 points-paying races in the Cup Series and 11 in Convertibles. But his best performance came in a non-points event at Daytona International Speedway in 1961 in which he finished second to Junior Johnson and just ahead of Fred Lorenzen (Atlanta Journal Constitution), service info coming at ClarkFuneralHome.comno info on services yet.(5-9-2014)

Eligibility Criteria for the 2014 Sprint All-Star Race & Showdown

Sprint Fan Vote continues:

It’s time again for fans to vote their favorite Sprint Fan Vote-eligible driver into the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday, May 17 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Voting opened March 16 and closes at 7:00pm/et on Friday, May 16, one day before the green flag. Through the Sprint Fan Vote, fans can cast their ballots an unlimited number of times to help determine the starting lineup for the prestigious race. The driver receiving the highest number of votes will earn a starting spot in the annual event worth a $1 million payday, courtesy of Sprint. For the first time in its history, the Sprint Fan Vote will include a sweepstakes awarding one lucky voter a trip for two to any 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race of his or her choice, among other instant prizes.

NASCAR fans have three options to cast their Sprint Fan Votes:

Download the NASCAR MOBILE application. Votes cast through NASCAR MOBILE will count as double towards a driver’s total.
Go to NASCAR.com/SprintFanVote
Visit The Sprint Experience, located in the midway at all NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.
Last year, then-rookie #10-Danica Patrick, garnered nearly half-a-million votes to win the Sprint Fan Vote. Eligible for the vote again this year, Patrick will be vying for votes against the likes of #47-AJ Allmendinger, #15-Clint Bowyer, #17-Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and rookies, #3-Austin Dillon and #42-Kyle Larson.

The winner of the 2014 Sprint Fan Vote will be announced in Victory Lane after the conclusion of the Sprint Showdown on Friday, May 16. In addition to accumulating the most votes, a Sprint Fan Vote-eligible driver must also finish the Sprint Showdown qualifying race with a car in “raceable” condition (as determined by NASCAR Competition) to earn a spot in the race field.

To date, 30 drivers are eligible for the 2014 Sprint Fan Vote. Eligibility for participation is restricted to those drivers who have been approved by NASCAR for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition and have met all other eligibility requirements. Amongst those eligibility requirements, drivers must have attempted to qualify for the 2014 Daytona 500 and race in the Sprint Showdown. Should any eligible Sprint Fan Vote candidate win a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race during the 2014 season, and therefore automatically earn a spot into the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, the driver’s name will be removed from the Sprint Fan Vote ballot and their existing votes will be voided.

Frontstretch tickets for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race are available for purchase and affordably priced at two for $99 (plus taxes and fees). Fans can obtain tickets by calling 1-800-455-FANS or buying online at CharlotteMotorSpeedway.com.

Tune in to the Sprint Showdown at 7:00pm/et on Friday, May 16 on FOX Sports 1, Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Then catch NASCAR’s biggest stars in Sprint All-Star Race Qualifying at 7:00pm/et on Saturday, May 17 on FOX Sports 1, and the Sprint All-Star Race immediately following at 9:00pm/et on FOX Sports 1, Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Changes to the All-Star Race Schedule announced:

Charlotte Motor Speedway officials have announced changes to the May 16-17 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race schedule. During the second day of the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway, officials announced that the Sprint Showdown will be moved to Friday, May 16, preceding the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series’ North Carolina Education Lottery 200. Before the green flag falls on Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, drivers will set the field for the main event with a three-lap qualifying that includes a mandatory four-tire pit stop and no pit road speed limit.

“These changes mean fans get even more bang for their buck here at The Greatest Place to See the Race,” said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. “In addition to watching the trucks battle on Friday night and rocking with a pre-race concert with Jake Owen on Saturday, fans will be treated to back-to-back nights of Sprint Cup Series action as drivers leave everything on the track with a $1 million payday on the line.”

The schedule change means that fans can watch both NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers battle on Friday night, May 16. It is the only date on the NASCAR schedule where both truck and Sprint Cup drivers will compete in non-qualifying contests on the same night at the same venue.

Drivers already eligible to race in the 2014 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race include:

#48-Jimmie Johnson, #99-Carl Edwards, #20-Matt Kenseth, #5-Kasey Kahne, #18-Kyle Busch, #4-Kevin Harvick, #34-David Ragan, #14-Tony Stewart, #16-Greg Biffle, #78-Martin Truex Jr., #55-Brian Vickers, #31-Ryan Newman, #22-Joey Logano, #2-Brad Keselowski,#1- Jamie McMurray, #24-Jeff Gordon, #11-Denny Hamlin and #41-Kurt Busch.

Eligible drivers who win a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race prior to the Sprint All-Star Race will be added to the field as well as the top two finishers in Friday night’s Sprint Showdown and the Sprint Fan Vote winner.

Once the field is set, drivers and teams will turn their attention to the most highly-anticipated qualifying run of the season, a timed run of three laps including a mandatory four-tire pit stop with no pit road speed limit. With the new schedule, the Sprint Showdown winner and second place finisher as well as the Sprint Fan Vote winner will make qualifying runs.

All NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race ticket holders can also enjoy a free concert featuring country music mega star Jake Owen before the green flag falls on the winner-take-all $1 million dash for cash.

Tickets for Friday night’s double-header with the Sprint Showdown and the N.C. Education Lottery 200 start at just $25. Fans can catch all the action of the Sprint Showdown, N.C. Education Lottery 200, Sprint All-Star Race qualifying, the Jake Owen pre-race concert and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race with weekend front stretch ticket packages starting at just $99. Just $10 down reserves a seat at The Greatest Place to See the Race, and interest-free payment plans are available. Call 1-800-455-FANS (3267) or visit www.charlottemotorspeedway.com for details.(CMS)(1-28-2014)

Dale Jarrett pushing Bristol for All-Star Race:

ESPN analyst Dale Jarrett is a public advocate of deeming Bristol Motor Speedway as the new venue for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. “Charlotte has been a great venue, and Atlanta that one year, but I think it’s time that we take it to a short track and let these drivers battle it out,” Jarrett said, winner of the 1997 Goody’s Headache Powder 500. “Short tracks are where every one of these drivers got their start. What better place to have the All-Star Race than action-packed Bristol. You have side-by-side racing; you have to know in your mind that if the drivers come here with that kind of money on the line, then they’re going to be willing to take out their best friend, just spin him and take the spot.”(Bluefield Daily Telegraph)(8-24-2013)
