We don't have anything official, but several people do some seed trading and sharing, so just post what you have to trade or give away and see if any one is interested. They can do a private replay to exchange addresses etc.

There are several on line seed-savers. The only one I have experience with is the Winter Grown Organization, which I used to get some small samples of various heirloom tomato seeds to try during my first gardening endeavors.

“”Bandera said she got over 2 inches of rain and that’s the most I’ve heard from her for - maybe years? “”

We got a bit more than 2”, and it wasn’t a fast heavy squall with a lot of run-off. It was a gentle soaking rain.

“If you don’t have natural shade...”
“Little Gem Romaine also did well in the shade.”

I’ve got shade! I have ignored a long wood planter attached to one of the brick walls because practically no sun gets to the first one half of it and sun never gets to the second half. Maybe lettuce would grow there but it would still have to endure hot air, but it’s worth a try. I need to clean the dirt out of there and put fresh potting soil mix in. .

I’ll look in the BG catalog and I have a large Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds catalog. I’ll read about the Little Gem to see if it might not die in heat.

You are lucky they still have the Deck Corn seed. I found that last year but they were already out of it. I think I bought three envelopes of it this year so I could freeze some.

Worth a try. Usually, if you can get 6-8 hours of morning sun and shade the rest of the day, you can grow a lot of stuff that doesn’t particularly like heat.

“if you can get 6-8 hours of morning sun”

I said practically no sun for the first half of planter and none for second half and that’s what I meant. There won’t be ANY hours of sun on that planter. That’s why I have ignored it - but maybe lettuce would grow.

Up until now, I figured only silk/plastic flowers would grow there. It’s just a barren neglected piece of wood planter nothing right now.

Chives and miner’s lettuce grow in the shade, but miner’s lettuce is more of a green ground cover than lettuce and it is one of those cold tolerant greens. It is pretty tasty mixed in with other salad greens.

I read once that the light outdoors is even in the shade is more than you get indoors in front of a window, so it’s worth a try.

I’ve had good luck with keeping seeds for years in a glazed pot on our kitchen counter, but we keep our house very cool all year.

Here’s an article that lists some veggies for the shade:

When the leaves just start turning yellow, you can start cutting them. Or if they get too beat up. I use rebent paperclips to hang them. I'll post a picture next time I hang a leaf.

I use romain lettuce. During the hot summer months, I rely mostly on chard. It's not lettuce, but it's a leafy green that can be eaten raw.

How was yours prepared? I've had barbecued armadillo, not unlike (nor as tasty) as pulled pork.

Had chicken-fried beaver at the same time. Not so good. But the gravy was fantastic!

I’ll read the link you provided.

I’ve decided on two lettuce types from Baker Creek and I’ll order them as soon as I’ve posted this. This first one looks like it might work in that planter in hot Texas. I’ll plant it in the first half of the planter and the next one in the last half of planter and see what happens to each:

“Mignonette Bronze #LT111
60 days. Excellent for hot and tropical weather, slow to bolt; frilled leaves, bronze-green heads. A superb type for the hot parts of the country. This heirloom was introduced in 1898. Pkt. $2.00”

Little Gem #LT116
“50 days. Very small, green, romaine-type. One of the very best tasting lettuces. A superb heat tolerant variety that is sure to please. Pkt. $2.25”

It will be bright where the planter is in the morning and shade from the brick wall starts after about noon, just no direct sun there after a bit in the morning and none in the last half of the planter.

I’ll also plant each in the wood planter on the ground and see what happens. That is shaded in the afternoon due to the roses being behind that planter and causing shade.

If that tropical lettuce grows in our heat, I will surely send you seed and if the Little Gem also grows in our heat, will send you that seed. Both these seeds are heirloom.

Is there some way to make it taste good? I have a ton of it in the garden, but I don't like the taste.

I planted some little Gem (Burpee seeds from Home Depot), but it never came up. I think I accidentally fried those two flats in the greenhouse one day. I do have some “free” lettuce from Mom & Pop nursery that is red sails and red romaine. They’re doing good, and not bitter like my black seeded simpson.
