Free Republic | 5/23/2014 | greeneyes

Posted on 05/23/2014 12:40:08 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Thanks for posting RD. Great to hear from you. I was just thinking about you when I was posting the thread and wondering if you were getting back to gardening.

In a few weeks, you’ll probably get the urge to plant those squashes and melons, and they’ll quickly take care of covering the garden space you have left.LOL

Well, yes I do rotate. I rotate my field crops too. I probably should try a cover crop.

Astonishing who you can run into these days in the big stores and gardening aisles.

BB gun or better. I have a big problem with coons and for them I catch them at night and bushwhack them with a 20 gauge.

Ain’t it the truth. The electric rates are sky high. Mo. had lots of electric power from coal. Not sure I can afford to run the air conditioner as much as I did back in 2011.

Hubby has a good crop of corn started, if we can just have enough water to keep it going this year.

Luckily I have a lake for my water. My only constriction is sunlite land.

There are some celebrities who simply want to live normal lives. I respect that.

$75!!!!!! WoW! I think I'm going into cardiac arrest! We pay $5.00 in Bandera. The highest I've heard of in the San Antonio area is $45 for crafts and $15 for produce vendors.
Guaranteed, our group is small and it's only 3 hours per week, but it is fun! We started in April with 4 or us regular vendors and a varying amount of others who come by to sell their goods once or twice.

We actually sold everything yesterday. That was a first for us, but we have quite a few return customers who are happy with our products.

Tree mulch will suck the nitrogen out of the ground during decomposition. That is the one drawback.

I am not sure about that. I do know they need to be well established before winter, and well watered before winter as well.

I read that a lot of the plants that die in the winter are really due to lack of good watering in the summer and fall.

Unfortunately we live in “the city” and the O law would be on us in a skinny minute if we fired any guns in town....well, unless we are warding off home invaders. then it is every chipmunk for himself!!

Our farmers markets are getting bad about letting you sell anything other than produce. Used to be able to get green beans, pickles and other stuff.

Glad the changed location is working out. Never underestimate the value of shade. Full sun means 6-8 hours. Many plants just can’t take southern exposure type sun for double that time.
