Animals generally work this stuff out for themselves. Cats stalk each other and dogs are usually pretty friendly right from the start.

We’ve always just brought the new cat in and opened the carrier between the food bowl and litterbox and just went about our daily routines. The cats always figured things out.

That's pretty much the way I've done it with dogs and cats and I've never had any serious injuries.
My dogs the day I brought the female home. She had been spayed about a week earlier so she had a shaved belly.
