In terms of basic creepiness, few buildings in Detroit can match the Masonic Temple. Stained by a century of Detroit soot and weather, the building's limestone exterior is almost comically foreboding. Legends surround the Temple's interior, which is said to contain a labyrinth of rooms, some connected by secret passageways. It's also full of dramatic, unused spaces—the most famous being an unfinished swimming pool on the sixth floor. Unfortunately, most of the building is off-limits to the public. But with rumors of renovation and a possible loft conversion floating around, we snapped some photos during a recent tour from Preservation Detroit.

Wow! All that craftsmanship is incredible.
No captions?
Gorgeous building. Is is abandoned?
I think it looks cool.
I’m pretty sure it was built during Detroit’s heyday before the influx of the scourge...
They could give it to the goths, as their worship center. Might snap a few yutes out of their haze to be thought of as a new religion.
Looks like a Masonic Hall.
Some very nice architecture.
A beautiful building.
Back in the late 60’s my cousin worked there and gave us a tour through most of the building.. It was really cool...Very beautiful.
Awesome pics! Very nice. The author starts out in typical Mason bashing mode though. Just can’t help himself from criticizing.
That type of architecture isn’t at all unusual in older cities. Those places are built real solidly.
The FOX theater in Detroit is another with that kind of style.
Incredible.
Only one lavatory? Three side-by-side “thrones”?
Imagine what the (now destroyed) temple in Jerusalem looked like when finished!
It definitely is being maintained.
I have a friend who is a Detroit native now living in NC. She is getting married in the Masonic Temple this summer. She posted the link in the original post just the other day. Amazing craftsmanship!
That triple “throne” looks to be a shoeshine stand, fyi. No offense, but it’s a city-thing.
Talented photographer.
Magnificent.
