Angelina Jolie stars in ‘Maleficent,’ a feminist-revisionist take on Sleeping Beauty

Watching Jolie pose and smolder and glower is the chief attraction of “Maleficent,” which posits that the reason for Maleficent’s rage wasn’t being left out of a christening party for Aurora, but instead started years earlier, when she fell in love with the princess’s father, Philip. Propelled by passion, power and betrayal, this iteration of the fable — written by Linda Woolverton and based on stories by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm — isn’t a lot of fun. (“I wish she had smiled more,” one tween viewer was overheard saying after a recent screening.) It’s dark and brooding and full of aggressive, unsettling impulses. What comic relief there is comes in the form of Aurora’s three caretaking fairies, played by the fabulous British actresses Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton and Juno Temple; Sam Riley is on hand as Maleficent’s factotum, a crow named Diaval. But even the enlivening efforts of these fine players are small beer compared with Jolie’s imposing bellicosity as a horned, embittered avenging angel.

Good. I hope the witch gives her the apple in the first scene and she sleeps though the rest of the movie.

This strikes me as similar to that horrible revisionist "Wizard" musical, Wicked, where the Wicked Witch of the West was portrayed as the "misunderstood," "different" gentle soul.

Horrible music, horrible story. I don't like musicals anyway, but the boss made us go.

Jolie is the witch in this movie.

I hear she is conservative.

She looks pretty hot in the trailers; in a cartoonish sort of way.

In real life, she looks like a crack whore.

As I said. Okay, hopefully she’ll eat her own apple.

I have not seen the show Wicked (and won’t for various reasons), but the book had a theme of the Wicked Witch as a Jewish Frum Female (dress in black, brown hair, etc) and the good witch as a stereotypical Shiksa — the blond girl all the boys liked, kind of ditzy, etc., replete with the other wicked witch (the handicapped sister) having a weak nebbishy Jewish suitor who despised her, but did as he was told, although he held a torch for the shiksa (the “good” witch).

Was this carried through?

I don’t necessarily agree with the theme or book, but the social conflict of being “different” (in a very specific way) is a major issue among frum Jewish girls as they progress through childhood, and I was surprised to see it in a pop culture book.

The beautifully inspirational thing about it though,....is that no one HAS to go see any of this garbage that hollywood spews out!! You can always choose to boycott hollywood like I have for years and years....don’t give them a dime of your money...

if i had to guess, i'd say it's the words a feminist-revisionist take in the title...

I didn’t catch that angle in the show. To be honest, I fell asleep about halfway through it.

I just remember that Glenda the good witch was depicted as the evil “goody two-shoes” and Hebseba (sp????) was the misunderstood, green-skinned outcast (born that way.)

Yep. As I said. I can’t remember seeing her in any movie. Not even Tomb Raider. Was she in that?

No one has EVER equalled Joan Crawford in those departments, IMO ;)
