Monarch airline bans reclining seats on all its planes after 90% of passengers vote to ditch them
UK Daily Mail ^ | May 30, 2014 | Carol Driver

Monarch is to introduce non-reclining seats across its entire fleet of planes. The light-weight design, to be rolled out this summer, has been launched to create more ‘living space’ for passengers after customer research showed the existing style was unpopular. It comes after surveys revealed that nine in ten travellers wanted reclining seats banned, and voted them one of the most common causes of mid-flight anger.

I wonder if this will become the new norm for air travel.

The only person on any airplane I’ve been on who reclines his seat is the guy sitting in front of me.

Short lived victory, the planes will probably be retrofit to squeeze in another row as a result.

oh fer ... the existing seats may be unacceptable because they recline in a not quite upright/not quite reclined position.

whoever designed them were probably the same ones that invented those washroom faucets that you bloody your hands on, trying to bang the electric eye thingy to turn the frikkin' water on.

Sorry, did I bother you?

I won’t do it again.

But seriesly. This is a good move. I hate reclining seats. Unless there is no one behind you, or if there is and they don’t mind having 3 inches of knee space, then why have reclining seats?

Ain't that the truth? Got on a daytime flight in Denver once where the moron in front of me had to leave his damn seat reclined all the way to Pittsburgh.

A reasonable compromise might be to design the seats to decline 15 degrees and no more.

15 degrees is fine for a catnap and not so obnoxious to the person seated behind.

If somebody wants a damn bed they can buy one of those first class seats which recline the full 90 degrees.

I used to be told that reclining one’s seat was rude. Now, the first thing that happens when we get airborne and the light goes off, is the back of the seat in front of me is shoved in my face, probably by the guy who moved my little carryon to make room for his suitcase that contains all of his worldly possessions.

I’m old enough to remember airline flight before it became the “human cattle car”. (Although you were choking on cigarette smoke).

But I’m also old enough to remember how expensive it was (relative to what I made).

These days any domestic trip under 1000 miles I’m driving.

Looks like I am in the minority here. I recline as soon as I can because the seats are too uncomfortable in their straight up position. My mentality is that I own the entire space where recline is possible, as does the person in front of me.

I agree. As the person behind what use to I have for a space 10 inches in front of my face? I am not in that area at all. I dont recall the last time someone leaning back hampered me in anyway other than opening a laptop on the table. And who bothers with those any more? Everyone has a tablet or ereader. After along day sometimes lowering that seat just a few inches back is a lifesaver. catnaping while sitting straight up is all but impossible.

It comes after surveys revealed that nine in ten travellers wanted reclining seats banned...

The truth is that 9 in 10 want the guy in front of them to not recline their seat, but they probably still want to recline their own.

If everyone reclined their seat, then what's the problem?

I used to be told that reclining one’s seat was rude.

I never felt that way.

As far as I was concerned, if I paid $400 for the seat, them I'm going to recline it, just as the person in front of me can, and the person behind me can.

I won't let some weird social manipulation shame me into not taking advantage of what I paid for.

Airlines have been re-configuring seats for ever. I remembe when American Airlines made a big deal out of taking out an entire row in order to advertise more leg room than their competitors.

Nowadays, airlines have put those rows back, but have more legroom in the front half of the plan for those who want to pay an extra $50 for "economy plus" seats.

So I say, if you don't like my recline, buy a more spacious seat. But don't expect me to give up my recline.

If longer worry about it. If you recline, I’ll recline and pass your rudeness on the shlub behind me.
