A Hawaiian man has been sentenced to one year of probation for making his misbehaving son walk a mile home from school.

Robert Demond was also fined $200 and ordered to attend parenting classes after a judge called the punishment "old-school" and "no longer appropriate."

"These are different times," Judge Kathleen Watanabe told the defendant.

I wonder what they will do to him for taking the $200 out of the kids allowance.

The article doesn't say how old the child is. Was he 15, or 8? The judge also noted that the child would have had to walk home along a highway.

If you read the original source:

Father punished for ‘old school’ discipline

Hover over the link, and you'll notice the domain is "thegardenisland.com". That's Kauai. And the man is identified as living in Kilauea, which is on the north side.

I've been to Kauai, and spent a week just up the road in Princeville. The only highway in that part of the island is a two lane road, and there aren't any sidewalks.

At first glance, this is outrageous. But, if you dig a bit deeper, you have to wonder if the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Hey, at least he didn’t have to carry a twenty-something pound stone, like that other (4’2” 16 year old) did!

I walked half a mile almost everyday to school through the best 40 acre field that ever was. Two stock ponds, 2 1920’s cars, one 200 foot hill, one creek, wild blackberry bushes, skunks, o-possums, racoons, snakes, spiders, squirrels, ducks, geese, cats, dogs, motorcycles, trails everywhere made by all the kids in the surrounding neighborhood. No cell phones. Amazing I made it to school on time.

Abraham Lincoln’s parents would have been punished.

SOURCE:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Boyhood_National_Memorial

In November 1819, the area’s first school was opened by Andrew Crawford, and at age 10, Abraham attended a school for the first time, at a cost of two dollars per year. He was a student there for two school years, which were three-month intervals held during the winter months when the children were not needed for farming.

In 1822 the Lincolns enrolled the boy in a new school taught by James Swaney. As it was more than 4 miles (6.4 km) away and Abraham had to walk there, his attendance was poor.

In 1824 he was transferred to another school closer to home, which he attended until age 16, when he ended formal schooling.

only a mile; in HI; I used to live in HI, walking
wasn't a punishment, but a pleasure & saved gas.
crawling/walking/running; the original modes of transportation.

That is the original article from the Kauai newspaper.

It doesn't say how it happened to come to the attention of the prosecuting attorney. From 1956 through 1965 (age 5-14) I walked 3/4 mile to school, home for lunch, back to school, home at end of day.

No, but you do need a space to walk. The road in that area has limited shoulders. In some places, the vegetation comes right up to the edge of the road. And the bridges are narrow. Not far from there, the bridges are one-lane (traffic has to alternate).

Here's an example of a two-lane bridge there:

Street View

That one is a few blocks from the elementary school, although it wouldn't be necessary for students to cross this particular one.

Walking a mile in and of itself no big deal, but I wouldn’t want my kid to walk along most of the highways, no sidewalks, idiot drives and distracted drivers. Just had one girl recently killed by a car along a highway, she was just walking along. Not to mention being picked up etc.

This joke is on FR from time to time, but it is most apropos here:

Q: What do you call a lawyer with an IQ of 50?
A: ‘Your Honor’

This ‘old school’ comment demonstrates she cares little about the Constitution and is about as activist as they come. Impeachment proceedings should start today.

There were days in high school when I had to run the mile. Twice....

I always took the bus to and from high school which was over a mile. About 20 years ago, when I went back for my 20 year reunion I purposely jogged from my house and to the school and back as a personal goal. Very satisfying to basically cover almost the entire town.

I missed my bus and had to walk 8 miles home, in Florida summer heat. Taught me a great lesson to get out to the bus on time.

Aren’t we getting mixed messages here? Mrs. Obama tells kids they should be active and exercise; but now we hear that walking a whole mile is inhuman punishment?

The only reason I can see for the judge’s decision is if the road was dangerous and the child placed at risk for injury or death.
