"But your level of education was probably much higher than what they offer today."

Yep, I was in elementary school in the late sixties and seventies...it's a different world now.

"Have you also noticed how very few know the difference between “to” and “too”?"

Drives me nuts! I love the grammar/spelling pet peeve threads that periodically show up here....such a good chance to vent, LOL.

I’m with you! It’s so distracting. I see this kind of thing on Fox News headlines now, and I see it NIGHTLY on my local news.

In navysealdad's defense: The writer strives to communicate important ideas, and IDEAS are much more important than the medium that delivers them, the same way that a cargo of food is much more important than the ship that delivers it.

Yet, the arrogant or lazy writer wrongly thinks the ideas are so much more important than rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation, that the latter are merely arbitrary troublesome formalities.

The writer -- whoever it is -- NEEDS TO:

a) peruse and always keep close at hand a copy of Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style"

b) live by the rule, When in doubt, look it up.

As a person who makes a living by the written word, I make LOTS of typos and errors in my FR posts because this is recreation, not work. Therefore I am very forgiving of typos and errors in most FR posts. The only time I feel the urge to say something is when I get the sense that the writer is making these mistakes not just accidentally or because of haste, but rather because on a deeper level, the writer lacks respect for the reader and for the language. If you want to connect with readers, you must FIRST respect them.
