Porn use can lead to divorce: study

June 9, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The use of pornography in marriage can lead to a higher chance of divorce, a new study has found.

Analyzing data from the General Social Survey, the researchers found that porn users are more open to marital infidelity, the leading cause of divorce in the United States. They published their findings in the April issue of Psychology of Popular Media Culture.

The General Social Survey asked 551 married couples whether or not they had viewed a pornographic video in the last year. The couples were then asked about their views on extra-marital relations. The results showed a connection between the pornography viewers and those with sympathetic attitudes towards marital infidelity.

"If pornography consumption leads to more positive extramarital sex attitudes as the results of the panels suggest, pornography consumption may be a contributing factor in some divorces via extramarital sex behavior," the study states.

Researchers have found an abundance of evidence indicating the detrimental effects of pornography on individuals and society. One study found that viewing pornography leads to a weakened sex drive, while another discovered that porn addiction distorts the brain the same way alcohol and drugs do.

Pornography also has devastating effects on families, children, and communities. Dr. Patrick F. Fagan found that pornography use causes instability, distrust, and betrayal in marriages, severely damaging the bond between the husband and wife.

“Viewers of pornography assign increased importance to sexual relations without emotional involvement,” says Dr. Fagan. “The emotional distance fostered by pornography… can often be just as damaging to the relationship as real-life infidelity, and both men and women tend to put online sexual activity in the same category as having an affair.”

Therapist Dr. Jill Manning found that 56 percent of divorces involved a spouse with a pornography obsession. According to Dr. Kevin B. Skinner, writing in a 2011 article for Psychology Today, her finding is a “sobering statistic.”

“Every year for the past decade there have been roughly 1 million divorces in the United States,” he wrote. “If half of the people divorcing claim pornography as the culprit, that means there are 500,000 marriages annually that are failing due to pornography.”

On the other hand, have they studied whether divorce can lead to porn use?

To be serious though, this study claims to show causation, but the description of it seems to indicate that it merely shows correlation, not causation.

A prospective study would be required to prove causation, and would be darned hard to do, I imagine.

It should be be obvious, but I guess it’s not. I can’t understand why porn is considered a panacea today. Does it really do anything for anyone besides waste their time?

Most men just want to be loved and accepted by their wives. A good chunk of men who resort to pornography do so because they have been rejected by their wives.

People resort o all kinds of comforts when their basic needs are not being met. Our society isn’t very good at instructing people how to find healthy outlets when they aren’t able to have them met by those closest to them.

A married man over indulging in pornography is symptomatic more than porn causative

Women watch porn too....I can attest to this fact first hand once upon a time

Not quite like men but it does notch up randiness in plenty of gals

But not that guaze lens touchy feely stuff....quite the opposite surprising to me anyhow

Rocco had quite the female following....I think its like sex novels just amped up

Being all consumed and ravished by a strong forceful man or men

Girls are something else...not all are pillow biters

There’s a tigress in there somewhere

The point is it only makes those problems worse. Basically, porn is the opposite of sex.

As a man, I could say that. But sorry I don't believe that for a second. From the majority I can see, that is a small minority.

There is no question that those comforts do make it worse, because it forms an incentive-reward cycle that self-perpetuates.

There also aren’t always ways to solve problems either. How do you solve a wife who will not love her husband, and there are quite a few out there like this, even though he is fundamentally a good man who loves his wife and hasn’t done anything that should cause her to hate him?

Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV. -- Communist Goals (1963) Congressional Record—Appendix, pp. A34-A35

Along with advancing the homosexual agenda, the commies were behind the pushing of smut in America, fully supported by atheistic liberals and creeps like Larry Flynt.

Maybe you misunderstood my poorly made point.

Drago said it better.

Porn for men and divorce is more correlative than causative

If you disagree with that fine.

I don’t know any couples who divorced over porn but I’ve read about it online...especially if the man stopped fooling around with wife

But in real life I have known plenty couples who watched porn together.... not divorced yet anyhow

Women have secret lives that most men have no clue about. And, in general, they watch more porn than they let on....

Most men who resort to porn have rejected their wives. They want the “perfect” porn woman and fantasy that does not exist.

All I know is that commies are the porn pushers. Leftists Hugh Hefner, Larry Flynt and other atheistic smut peddlers are hell bound. Pornography, homosexualism and pedophilia are branches of the same evil root.

I agree....and they masturbate more than they admit too

Even whilst having a robust intercourse centered sex life with their partner

Women when they wish to be impregnated are insatiable vixens.... they can devour even the most virile man (men)

Its a myth women are the weaker sex when it comes to sex.

I’ve had this pleasure well known to me as a father of five.....the drive to have a baby is instinctive and can be omnipotent in some gals....not that I’m complaining

Porn is at least to me...a stimulant....not a substitute.

Most men use porn to meet their emotional needs, not to get a better looking woman. At the heart of the issue, he has a need that isn’t being met and it’s not often physical in nature.

Pornography is wrong for the simple reason that God condemns such material. It is not a form of recreation. It is not a personal right. It is a sin.

That's the closing point made by Jeffrey W. Hamilton in the well-written, Bible-based article, A Look at Pornography.

Men tend to underestimate just how fluid female sexuality is. Women that you think would never engage in bisexuality have often been there & done that. Though I would always advise any man to never expect a stable relationship with a women who has a more than casual interest in other women.
