In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

strident \STRAHYD-nt \ adjective
1. making or having a harsh sound; grating; creaking: strident insects; strident hinges.
2.having a shrill, irritating quality or character: a strident tone in his writings.
3.Linguistics . (in distinctive feature analysis) characterized acoustically by noise of relatively high intensity, as sibilants, labiodental and uvular fricatives, and most affricates.

Example sentences:
Only the parasites seemed to live there in a sinuous rush upwards into the air and sunshine, feeding onthe dead and the dying alike, and crowning their victims with pink and blue flowers that gleamed amongst the boughs, incongruous and cruel, like a strident and mocking note in the solemn harmony of the doomed trees.
-- Joseph Conrad, Almayer's Folly , 1895

Malka's voice became more strident than ever. She had been anxious to make a species of vicarious reparation to her first husband, and the failure of Milly to acquiesce in the arrangement was a source of real vexation.
-- Israel Zangwill, Children of the Ghetto: A Study of a Peculiar People , 1892

Etymology:
Strident entered English in the mid-1600s from the Latin strīdēre meaning "to make a harsh noise."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

The FOX female talking heads are becoming too strident for me to watch any more — Pirro, Kelly, Ingraham, Carlson, Perino, etc. Of course, OReilly is the worst, and he’s not even female. Where is Jeanne Kirkpatrick when we need her — a woman who could speak truth without being shrill?

One of my friends sounds just like Greta. Except she’s not a scientologist.

For some reason, Greta does not bother me. She’s the only one I still watch on a regular basis. She asks real questions and demands real answers (except from Hillary). She doesn’t get “preachy”.

I surprise myself by saying that because I did not have high hopes for her when she came aboard FOX. She has turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
