I Divorced my Husband and Married the Au Pair
The Guardian ^ | Viv Groskop

Posted on 06/30/2014 11:40:39 AM PDT by nickcarraway

When Michele Macfarlane started to lose her eyesight, she got an au pair to help with the children. But she fell in love with the younger woman and realised she was gay

It's a well-worn cliche to fear the arrival of an attractive au pair. The threat, it is assumed, is always that the husband will stray. "There is so much written about this," Michele Macfarlane says, laughing. "I remember that early on I said to my mother, 'You know, I think our new au pair is gay.'

Tell us what you think: Star-rate and review this book "My mum joked, 'Well, if she is gay, that's a good thing. At least you won't have the problem of your husband running off with the au pair.'"

In the end, as the title of Macfarlane's account puts it bluntly, her story has a different ending: I Left My Husband for the Au Pair. When the au pair, Marizette arrives, Macfarlane emails a friend: "She's done a lot of competitive sport so she's nicely built – tall with broad shoulders, a flat tummy and strong arms." Massive alarm bells.

Although she was born in South Africa, Macfarlane, 46, is British, having spent half of her life here. She and her former husband, Peter, who is a chiropractor, met as drama students in Coventry. They started a family in their early 20s. By 24, Macfarlane was a full-time mother. In her early 30s, the whole family moved to Cape Town.

Been doing, actually. For quite some time.

Freshman year of undergrad I had a movie inflicted upon me in the mandatory Cinema Arts class. Plot was that a stuffy middle aged suburban housewife goes for a weeks getaway vaction at a Western dude ranch. Where the ranch’s younger and more attractive female owner awakens the housewife to the knowlege that she’s really gay.

With the “awakening” scene leaving very little to the imagination.

Crappy movie, actually, although it took me a while to get what the real underlying message was ...

Already happened. They adopted a baby first. Now she is with another woman.

So this woman, who would benefit greatly from having a devoted and helpful spouse to help her cope with the loss of her eyesight, flushed all that away for a brief fling with the babysitter.

How this is story is anything but tragic is beyond my understanding.

Maybe her ex-husband will be a stand-up guy and take her back, which would be far more than she deserves.

No, she made it clear she wants nothing to do with men, and she has a new woman in her life.

She divorced Peter and married Marizette, with whom she split two years later.

Now Macfarlane lives with a new (female) partner, Skye Grove, 46, a communications manager, in Cape Town – with five children.

With that name, she should probably be a TV weather lady.

Not just a woman. Remember Gene Robertson who left his 30 year marriage for another man and has been celebrated for his courage. Never mind the wreck of his wife’s and children’s life. But if he had done this to his wife for a younger chippy, he would have been roasted, and rightly so.

the story has turned her into a poster girl for coming out later in life . . . In some ways, Macfarlane feels lucky that she realised she was gay at all . . . She does not regret what happened . . . What she would most like is for people to realise that what happened to her could happen to anyone.

If you rewrote this without the gay references and just told a story of a man who bedded and married his female au pair, every decent person, and even many liberals and feminists, would find that immoral. Splitting up the married, biological parents of a family is far too high a price to pay for whatever pleasures the new couple may find in bed. Liberals celebrate this adultery, as they celebrate Bishop Vicky Gene Robinson leaving his wife and young daughters for another man because they judge based on sexual orientation. To me, the Seventh Commandment (Thou shalt not commit adultery) applies regardless of the sex of the person you are cheating with, as does the vow "forsaking all others".

‘You can be gay and not realise it at all.’

How’s that?

I have no idea how anyone could be unsure as to whether or not they were homosexual. Since it’s a mental illness, I guess it makes sense that it doesn’t make any sense.

I’d say this woman this woman is bi at worst, married to man for 20 years and suddenly she’s a dyke, bah.

I read about this guy that says he became gay after a stroke, he stopped playing sports and became a hairdresser. I think it’s much much more likely he was just in the closet and used the stroke as an excuse.
