Adm. Michelle Howard becomes first four-star woman in Navy history
WAPO ^ | July 1, 2014 | Dan Lamothe

The ceremony included a bit of comedy, but there was no denying the significance: For the first time in its history, the Navy promoted a woman on Tuesday to become a four-star admiral.

Surrounded by friends, family and peers, Adm. Michelle J. Howard was promoted to her new rank at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. She’ll take over as the vice chief of naval operations, the No. 2 officer in the service. She is not only the first woman to hold the job, but the first African-American.

Both of my parents served in WW2. One of my brothers in law served in the Navy. One of my nephews served two tours in Iraq as a Marine. One of my nieces is married to a wonderful man who is in the U. S. Army, Special Forces.

I am unable to believe that this woman even approaches their patriotism.

But was she promoted through military affirmative action?

No doubt. Because throughout all recorded history there had never, ever been a black person or a woman who got where she got because she deserved it, right?

Don’t know, but it is a rapid rise, I guess you would have to compare it with other Military aides to the Sec of the Navy.

This new type of leadership and 22% of West Point freshmen being girls, is probably why we Americans and especially old vets, feel so secure and happy today as we look at the Cold War being reconstructed, and Islam and China on the march.

This woman agrees with you. The military as social experiment continues.

exactly.

This entire thread demonstrates the insidiousness of Affirmative Action, how it causes hate and discord, and how it even hurts and/or stigmatizes those it purports to help.

ADM Howard is easily one of the most popular Navy Flag Officers out there, and with good reason. I know several who have worked for here, and they think the world of her and her leadership. She supposedly backs her Sailors 100% , treats them genuinely and humanely, and gets tons of respect for her steadfast support. She also enjoyes a reputation as an immensely capable Officer. Hard to find that strong of support for a lot of the other Flags out there.

Also, someone said her career was insignificant compared to others. I can’t see how that is true. She commanded an Amphib at the O-5 level, an Amphibious Squadron at the O-6/Major Command Level, an Expeditionary Strike Group, Relief Operations in the Pacific, and Task Force 151 in the mid-East. That’s pretty big shit for a Surface Officer.

She has had a quick ride to the top. Is it luck? Is she that good? Is it just straight up favoritism? Unfortunately she can’t beat the naysayers, due to the ugly nature of Affirmative Action. I’d be just as skeptical as the rest of you guys if I didn’t know differently in this case.

Clarence Thomas has received the same questions his whole life, but is a solid Conservative Judge that’s busy saving our asses routinely.

Just another case of Liberal/Leftist policies screwing us ALL over.

and to tag onto my past post—her rise hasn’t been as quick as I thought. She’s been in 36 years (where even 4 stars get out at around 40 years), and is only 3 years junior to ADM Greenert, the current CNO (who has already been in the job over a year himself)
