Heartbreaker: U.S. Falls to Belgium in Overtime 2-1, Exits World Cup

We’ll get 'em next time.

Sadness mixed with pride engulfed the nation as the United States men's soccer team was defeated 2-1 in the World Cup Round of 16 by Belgium on Tuesday in Salvador, Brazil — moving the "Red Devils" into the World Cup Quarter-Finals and sending the Yanks home.

After a closely contested 90 minutes that ended level at 0-0, the dream run for America in the 2014 World Cup ended on the foot of winger Kevin De Bruyne in the opening minutes of overtime.

Belgium's Romelu Lukaku then scored again in the 104th minute of overtime, putting a dagger into the collective heart of the country.

"It was a disappointment, but ... we were here, we made it — we made it through the group of death, we proved ourselves, we showed our worth," said Tyler Reavas, who watched the loss at a bar in Manhattan. "As Americans, I can tell you, we are proud of what our boys did."

Forward Julian Green scored the U.S.'s lone goal in the 105th minute — stoppage time in the first overtime period — and there was a flurry of late dangerous activity around Belgium's young keeper Thibaut Courtois, but it was too little, too late.

Earlier, U.S. striker Chris Wondolowski had an excellent chance to win the game for America in the 72nd minute of regular time, but sent a shot sailing wide.

The U.S. could get another chance at a World Cup run four years from now in Russia.

Now that the US is out of the running, we will see just how much the US is embracing Soccer. Watch the TV viewing stats ... bet they drop dramatically.

Good point. TV viewership of a sport’s playoffs usually go up in a market right after that market’s local team has been eliminated, right?

A sobering up to realize how far the US still has to go.

The whole midfield needs to be overhauled, they were probably the weakest group of midfielders in the entire tournament.

I feel so sorry for your loss.

Your King Obama the Liberal sympathizes.

This flirtation with soccer, being force fed by the same MSM we know and don’t love, is not a good thing.

It goes hand in hand with all the left liberal agendas that have been planned for decades.

Soccer is fine for the rest of the world who don’t know better.

I don’t know about that because America is filling up with people who love soccer (immigrants)and most of them probably never will care how well the U.S. does versus the rest of the world.

The ratings probably dropped big-time after Meh-Hee-Co went out.

Your brainpower continues to disappoint.

Sorry that you are so mentally weak that one bad President has made you disrespect your country's team.

Post back when you grow up, or grow a pair.

Well this old Tennessean intends to watch every match I can fit into the schedule. The teams remaining for the round of eight area varied in talents. Argentina’s Messi is a little Genius and the entire Brazilian team is loaded with talent. But Argentina will be run over by a team that presses constantly in mid-field. This is an interesting World Cup even as the hard working American team bows out. The American goalie is astonishing in his tenacity. He blocked/saved more shots than any other goalie in World Cup history today!

Was that turd world crap still going on? Guess the MSM was not doing such a great job of hyping it up as they thought.

Hope everyone got a ribbon and a star on their forehead.

Waa.

When Blackburn Rovers and the Ipswitch Town Tractor boys are back in the Premier, then maybe football will be righted.

Until then (and forever) it’s not good for the USA.

It’s good for socialist countries, which I guess is the point of trying to make America a soccer nation like almost every other country.

Today's soccer-loving immigrants will root for their former homeland's team. A prime example are the Mexicans in LA who fill a huge stadium to root for Mexico over the USA.
