Rubio's Effort to Modernize the GOP
Commentary ^ | July 1, 2014 | Peter Wehner

In an earlier post I asked who on the right, in the wake of the ruins of the Obama presidency, will step up and seize the opportunity. Among those who are is Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

Last week Senator Rubio gave a policy address, which elicited favorable comments from Ross Douthat, Ramesh Ponnuru, Jim Pethokoukis, and Reihan Salam. Like these four, I found Senator Rubio’s speech, co-hosted by Hillsdale College and the YG Network, to be quite impressive. The Florida senator offered ideas on how to reform our entitlement programs, tax code, higher education, health care, and our social safety net. In doing so, he spoke about single mothers and working class families, wage stagnation, student debt and retirement security, and the effects of globalization and automation. And like Representative Paul Ryan, Rubio understands the need for structural changes in programs, which is quite different, and rather more important than, simply reducing spending.

In making his case, Senator Rubio presented himself as an advocate for modernization rather than moderation (in this instance meaning nudging the GOP in a more liberal direction). He spoke about the need for a policy agenda designed for the 21st century and adjusting to the realities of this new era. Mr. Rubio clearly wants the GOP to be both conservative and constructive, opposing the president’s agenda but also willing to offer alternatives to it. The left, he says, is offering ideas that are old, tired and stale; a conservative agenda, as Rubio has laid it out, is innovative, responsive, and “applies the principles of our founding to the challenges and the opportunities facing Americans in their daily lives.”

I completely disagree with the premise of this article. Marco Rubio HAD a bright future in the GOP, until he became Chuck Schumer's bitch and worked with the Senate Democrats and McCain, Graham et al. (unofficial Democrats)to push amnesty down the throats of the American people. Chuck Schumer knew what his doing when his conned Marco Rubio to work with Senate Democrats to pass amnesty. (Not that Rubio needed much arm twisting to go along.) In the process, he DESTROYED Rubio's future in the Republican Party. Marco Rubio was too stupid and naive to realize this was what Schumer's motive was.

Marco Rubio is COMPLETELY FOS if he thinks amnesty will help build up the United States' strength and help stabilize wages, secure the border, make America more competitive, etc. In reality, IT WILL DESTROY AMERICA by destroying this country's middle and working classes./rwa

The GOP is dead, deceased, not producing CO2, is at room temp.

And, if we’re lucky, all those “GOP” idiots currently serving in congress will soon follow.

Die, RINOs, die.

Die, die, die, die, suffer, die, suffer, die!!!!

We can then get onto developing a true conservative party willing to do war with liberals.

Allen West needs to run against Rubio in 2016.

Wasn’t this called “Compassionate Conservatism” 10 years ago?

So government stealing the money of this and future generations is at best a secondary concern? Sounds "modern" all right - and I say the Hell with it.

Rubio needs to ba talking about getting government out of our lives, not about offering us cool new ways to tell us how to live our lives.

Rubio is RINO incarnate.

The Gang of 8 bill is far more destructive than just amnesty. It triples legal immigration over the next decade to 33 million and doubles guest worker programs from 650,000 a year to 1.4 million. The bill floods the US labor market at a time when 21 million Americans are unemployed or underemployed.

You have it right.

Rubio has sold out believing that he can succeed by triangulating if he funds himself with Establishment Republican money. Hence his sell out on immigration to get fatcat amnesty donors on board. Triangulation is evident in every issue which you have cited. Regrettably, Rubio is not motivated by conservative principles but by ambition.

Modernize the GOP?

After Mississippi, the GOP is dead.

Someone needs to tell Rubio.

I will not vote for Rubio again, period. He lied to us from his heart and not from a talking points paper.

I would support Allen West even more than I did Rubio to defeat Marco.

Either he was lying or he sold out fast as soon as he got to DC. Turned out not to be a dime’s worth of difference between him and the Orange Menace. But he certainly betrayed his supporters who worked overtime to help him defeat Crist.

Rubio is more concerned that he has a place in and is like by the liberal Senate than he is with doing the right (conservative) thing... he has lost any influence with conservatives.
