OTC Birth Control: Your Body, Your Choice, Your Responsibility
The Federalist ^ | July 1, 2014 | Ben Domenech

Yesterday’s narrow Hobby Lobby decision shows why the culture war isn’t over – it’s just getting started. The reality is that in the absence of the ability to compel employers to pay for things over their religious objections, and at a time when covering 16 forms of birth control out of 20 is culturally insufficient, the Obama administration will be more than happy to turn to the traditional method of the left: skipping the middle man of the employer and just handing people other people’s money.

So because some people cannot be compelled to pay for their employee’s IUDs, Plan B, and Ella, everyone will be compelled to pay for it. It renders the whole argument over deeply held religious beliefs a cute sideshow: if employers can’t be forced to pay for it, all taxpayers will. Congratulations on retaining your personal image of faithfulness while sticking the rest of us with the bill.

The people WANTED Marxism and the introduction to Marxism is what they are getting. God save the Republic!

This may not be a bad idea on birth control pills. However, isn’t there some danger associated with the abortifacient drugs, especially if used on a regular basis?

People don’t naturally assume that over the counter drugs should be available for free: they think they should be able to buy them.

No, I think "People" assume that they should be able to buy them with our money. That's what we object to.

That’s a disingenuous argument....

He supposes that OTC birth control will somehow be paid for though a mandate from the federal government via the taxpayer...

I don’t see how that works....

First the FDA needs to approve them for OTC... Which isn’t going to happen for a host of good reasons....

Almost surprised it’s taken ~100 years to go from Republic to ‘swirling the bowl’ Banana Republic (@ best)

Course, we have many here who vote party over Republic/lesser-of-2-evils (cause winning is ALL....as if the Bush years w/ a full GOP Congress didn’t tell ‘em all they needed to know about ‘small gov’t’ “opposition”)

All hormonal contraceptives are a Class 1 carcinogen, as well as increasing the incidence of heart attack, stroke, and thrombosis.

Most of the warnings for birth control pills are more dire after a certain age - (30 or 35?), but I take your point.

Any kind of carcinogen is more likely to affect you as you get older and the years of exposure accumulate.

After my daughter joined the military and was considering the prescription you can get that will prevent menstruation - a variant on standard b/c pills - she decided against it because she was smoking at the time, and the chance of stroke or coronary for smokers can’t be ignored even if you’re 21.

They’ll pay for your sterilization, no deductible or copay. But if you need surgery to fix something wrong, rather than break something that works right, you’re SOL.

But if you need surgery to fix something wrong, rather than break something that works right, you’re SOL...no kiddin' - try to get help for prostate cancer after you're 75 - "well, anything we could do for you would be more unpleasant than the cancer, and you're going to die of something else before it does you in anyhow, so....."

I didn’t even know such a thing existed (the variation on b/c pills).

You have to be 24 before Tricare will pay for a vasectomy for you. Or so I have been told.

One might get the idea the Obama administration wants Americans to (a) not be born and (b) die ASAP.

Oh but they won’t allow a guy younger than that to have one out of fear that he will later decide he wants it reversed.

Something to do with dosage or something. I know, that’s absolutely no information at all ...

Because you’re all grown up and ready to make permanent decisions at 24! Yeah, right. My son is 20 and can’t even make himself a dentist appointment.

Iirc, it used to be they’d do a tubal ligation when a woman was 30.
