My computer connection is about to bite the dust.

Some of you know that I've been having re-occurring Internet connection troubles since the end of Feb. At first I was told it was the computer (which couldn't even be successfully repaired) so I got another (rebuilt) computer and for fifty days I was set to go. Then suddenly on 5/20 the problem started occurring again.

I took the computer back to the shop at which I'd purchased it to have it tested and apparently there was no problem whatsoever with it, so I was told it must have been my connection. Then began a very long and painful experience dealing with the tech support people at AT&T (for the record, AT&T have never been anything but good to me up until now). But now they were telling me there was absolutely no problem on the network, and sure enough, whenever they remote controlled my computer it worked great. Then the minute they turned it back over to me I began having the exact same trouble.

When a tech came out to the house last month he told me that everyone in this neighborhood was having the exact same problems I was and that it was located in the local box that everyone is connected through. So they spent a whole day fixing it. The problem was--you guessed it--after it was fix I continued to have the trouble. So another tech came by to check the lines here at the house and he told me that he could find nothing whatsoever wrong with the equipment. So it's not the computer, the network, or the wiring.

And now this is where some of you tell me it's the modem. Well I've got news for you. I have a spare modem. I'm using it right now. And guess what? That's right; I'm offline. I don't even know if I'll ever get to post this message.

I had one brief moment of hope when I took the line out of the surge protector and plugged it directly into the jack. Then it began working and I was elated. But now even with these adjustments I'm offline again and it doesn't look like I'll manage to get online again.

My computer connection seems to have bitten the dust, for whatever reason. I'll try to post this if the light turns green again but I don't expect it to.

I know I'm a terrible person and rub everyone the wrong way. That seems to be my function. But I just want you all to know that I will miss you.

The light just turned green. This may be my last post from home. I'll try to check you out at the local library from time to time.

FreeRepublic still works on dialup connections, and if you have cell service in your area, you can easily use computer tethering or hotspot access and Freep to your heart's desires without worry about going over the data cap. (Just avoid clicking those links...)

Do you have DSL? I went round-and-round with AT&T with my problem, including multiple technician visits, until one tech came out and installed some sort of a filter (I think) on the line coming into the house. Problem went away, although I was moody about why the previous techs didn’t do it.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Find the name of a compatible cable modem and pick one up from ebay or amazon or micro center. For goodness sake ATT will probably send you a replacement.

Talk to you neighbors to see if they still have the problem. You must do this. If they are running fine, ask if you can bring your computer over and hookup to their connection. If it works fine, it has to be your home connection to the local equipment.

A possible cause might be your computer’s battery. Good luck with it.

did at&t line guys give you filters for every single phone jack in your house? you need one for every phone jack because they all split off the incoming line and can introduce noise onto the line. i have em on all in my house and they make a difference.

i’d also check the physical connections on whatever wiring panel/post the outside line and house line wiring connect to each other. you may want to get a new one if it’s a really old board/post.

If you have DSL, other electronic devices on the phone lines will cause you problems. Each of those may require a filter. Electronic devices include most phones except for the old rotary types.

I had the filters they supplied on everything. Like I said, the tech came out and installed something else outside and all was fine.

Cable or WiFi or Dial-up?

==

Several years ago, I had all kinds of problems with my cable internet. It was a relatively new concept in this small town. About every 2 years it would mess up. The first time, I had 4 different crews over a period of days trying to discover the problem. It turned out to be a ‘hub’ a couple of blocks from my house. After they got that fixed, things were okay for a couple of years.

Each time a crew came out, they started by checking the connections at the back of my desktop computer. I would tell them they won’t find anything until they back track to that hub. But, they would spend a couple of hours at my computer, at the line coming into the house, at the junction on the poll outside my house, and then eventually work their way back to the problem hub.

==

Have you checked with others in your area to see whether they are having problems?

So where do you live? Maybe you could just drop the landline internet altogether and just go 4G.

We had the “hub” problem before too. Apparently they once had to rewire the whole thing. Within days we were hooked to FiOS though. lol

Why don’t you just buy a new computer (not another used one) and ditch the modem altogether. Just get a Wi-Fi connection (i.e. Verizon FIOS).

Life without FR is seriously a sad and lonely existence. I have been there. I don’t envy Zionist at all. I feel his pain!

“I had the filters they supplied on everything. Like I said, the tech came out and installed something else outside and all was fine.”

Techs had to dig up our phone lines. They crossed over our neighbors line and was in their yard. When talking to the neighbor about the problem and the need to dig up her yard, she mentioned these weird noises she had heard for years on her phone line. Turns out my dial-up modem was cross-talking over her phone for the five years I lived there before getting DSL.

The old phone lines were not installed with DSL in mind. Perhaps the filter removes some cross-talk from your neighbor?
