Need Firefox Help
7/2/14

Posted on 07/02/2014 8:18:02 PM PDT by pabianice

I have been using Firefox for some time with little problem. But today when I used it it had slowed to a crawl -- unusably slow, really. A page takes 3-4 minutes to load. I have changed nothing on my PC. My internet speed checks fine (I use Verizon). Can anyone give a suggestion to clear this up? Thanks.

I want to thank all the folks who recommended Pale Moon. I’ve just been fed the fuch up with FF because of all of the memory leaks, etc. Have been running v16 forever and whenever I’ve tried to upgrade to newer versions, they’d all pretty much just crash after 30 minutes of heavy use, and not a single version of FF that I’ve ever used has ever fixed the memory leak problems. I actually installed a program on quicklaunch so I could quickly kill FF at the point it’s consumed all of my RAM, so I can then start over with “Restore Session” with all of my previous tabs. After trying every “solution” to the leak problem, that’s the only one that every worked. Apparently the arrogant bastards at mozilla would rather tweak the UI to death rather than make a browser that actually works. They’re worse than even Microsoft because Microsoft has to listen to their customers sooner or later or go broke. Nonprofits can just drift along forever.

At any rate, I just finished installing PM, including importing everything from FF, which went flawlessly, including all settings and the plethora of add-ons I use. Only difficulty was getting roboform attached, which I can’t live without. I did finally dumb around and got the roboform taskbar program to attach roboform to PM, which then worked flawlessly. It’s necessary for the roboform taskbar program to run all time for roboform to continue to work on PM, but this is a small price to pay to ditch FF forever.

Even with minimal use so far, I’ve been stunned at how much faster PM is than FF, as well as the VERY small memory footprint occupied by PM vs FF.

Thanks again everyone for the PM tip!!! I’ll be installing PM instead of FF on all of my client’s computers in the future as well!

Pale Moon takes the basic FF and makes it better. Open Source works that way.

That is why other people/groups can take it and make it better. That is where Pale Moon came from.

Finally, I did. Uninstalled Firefox. Installed Spybot/Antivirus. Had a bad time running Spybot (”time remaining for scan , 5423 minutes”). Had to contact Spybot and get them to help me run it (it has to be run in safe mode). Found 25 problems. Fixed them. Reinstalled Firefox. Runs well now, But was amazed at how many hundred/thousand crap entries were in my computer, 99% of them spam.

Speaking of which, can anyone recommend software for finding and removing spam already in your PC?

>Speaking of which, can anyone recommend software for >finding and removing spam already in your PC?

noticed all your lovely responses on this now dead thread.
Its dead because I was the only one you responded to, plenty gave advice, took the time to type it out, and you didnt issue one thank you or response—besides me. Seems kind of userish, you want things easy.

Frankly I do have a short list of free programs , but that would not be too helpful to you.

If you own something you either pay someone to fix it, or you do it yourself. Part of doing it yourself of course is that you have some minor or key help along the way. The internet makes people lazy when it comes to asking questions and expecting answers. If you needed help with Spybot, then you need to educate yourself or pay someone.

Spybot gets rid of spyware and adware, thats its category and thats what it removed from your machine.
If you dont have anti-virus scanner then you have more problems..virus and other bad things. The category of spam(which you said you are looking for, but is probably use of a careless term on your part) more or less fits into adware—which presumably spybot took care of.

No one program gets it all in one category, so you should run a variety of good-reputation free programs in these categories and then make your own decisions about what you like.Dont download something that looks good , unless you check it out with google as to its reputation through others, otherwise you’ll be downloading huge problems.

Good luck with google my friend.

Thank you for your reply. I have had to abandon Firefox and gone back to Iexplorer. Pale Moon simply freezes my PC and gives me “sorry but we have to close your computer now” warnings. The web has become so difficult to use I may simply abandon it. Almost every download site for some browser tries to install dozens of other crap programs into your PC. I finally made Spybot/antivirus run but have to go into safe mode to make it work. All in all, a bummer.

if you have these many problems your supposed to reload your operating system. You can pretty much assume that or should assume that all your passwords have been sent off somewhere.

You should have a disk , if not you can download by googling it(”microsoft XP Home download” for instance) and end up at a place called DigitalRiver which runs downloading for M.S. OS systems. If you download then you’ll have to burn it to a DVD, if this is too much then perhaps DigitalRiver can sell you a copy by mail.

If you have a C.O.A. sticker aka M.S. serial # sticker for the OS your good to go.
