Woman Graduates from High School at 111-Years-Old
WTKR ^

Posted on 07/03/2014 4:38:34 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Lela Burden received her degree today. The centenarian lightly clapped just before she was handed her diploma. NewsChannel 3 first introduced to you her in May, when Doumar’s celebrated her 111th birthday with ice cream.

“I’m not old yet, I’m still a young lady,” Burden said back in May.

Burden is delightfully sharp. She remembers nearly everything about her time in school.

Schools were temporarily shut down in 1918 for a flu pandemic, by that time the teenage Burden was working two jobs and never went back to finish her education.

Decades of rich life experience taught her more than most learn in two lifetimes.

“Not any different,” she said on how she feels about being one of the world’s oldest women. “Still have your aches and pains but thank God I’m still alive.”

I trust she didn’t have to take many classes to finish the diploma. If she was a high school sophomore she was probably better educated and more literate than today’s college graduates.

When my son was 4....he saw a billboard for a local college featuring an elderly person with a robe and mortar board on graduating. He asked...”Did she get held back?” XD

160 credits to graduate . . . 159 credits for life experience. Maybe went to school for a week?

Even more impressive, she was captain of the cheerleading squad.

Pet peeve, people psoting without giving a clue where the story is from.

Norfolk, Va. – There are fewer than 60 people living in the world who can say they are 110 years old or older.

The Gerontology Research Group which verifes supercentenarians (people who have attained the age of at least 110 years) notes on thier website that there are currently 73 verified supercentenarians. They point out that there maybe as many as 350 to 400 supercentenarians, but they have only verifed a portion of them.

I have some issue with their rate of verifcation, but the writer of the article did not check the large print to see that there actually 73 verfied supercentenarians, not less than 60.

Interestingly there are only two men on the list at this time and they are at 63 and 70 in seniority. Women clearly live to a super old age over men.

I just noticed that Lela is in the pending cases section, so she is not even one of the 73 verifed. And she would be last on the list.

GRG has Gertrude Weaver F 30 April 1898 116 years, 64 days United States also in the pending who would be the second oldest living person if verfied.

Well, it was reported by radio or T.V. station WTKR. From that we may infer it was east of the Mississippi River.

I'd like to see proof of her age.
