John Wayne’s a personality.

Clint Eastwood is a FORCE.
When our daughter was eight, she thought she was in love with him and was CRUSHED to learn that, at sixty three, he was too old for her.
She couldn’t understand the concept.

John Wayne was mostly in westerns, and when it wasn’t a western, he was not comfortable in the role.
Clint Eastwood has had a much more diverse acting career, but has has many more R rated movies with more interesting story lines and roles.

Clint Eastwood - better actor and director

I think it’s an unfair comparison as they are so different and from different generations/different genre westerns, etc.

I rate both #1 and put them in different categories.

Each clearly stands at the top of a different kind of western........

No, not a cop-out. Just the truth.

Clint Eastwood but I suspect it has more to do with my age than anything.

John Eastwood or Clint Wayne, which shall it be?

I’m partial to Clint Eastwood. John was at the top for his time but Clint is a much better actor.

Happy 4th to the KINGofttax! Hope you and your family have a wonderful day. Now on to my usual JW screed:

There was a time when I was known on FR as the Duke’s #1 fan! After a thread about the Duke, I would get private messages from people sending me wonderful photos of THE MAN, lol.

That being said, it is unbearable for me to ever read threads on John Wayne because of the intense ignorance shown about acting values, patriotism and the Duke’s personal history.

He was one of the greatest film stars of the golden age of movies. He was a brilliant actor who trained, worked and delivered on every picture. Look at his body of work from “Stagecoach” to “True Grit.” If he didn’t know how to work out of westerns (and most actors can work in more than one genre) what do we make of his performances in “They Were Expendable”? and “Island in the Sky”? If he didn’t know how to act why did the greatest film directors clamor for his time?

Movies are a popular art but they are an ART. And not everyone has a good take on this form. It takes a trained eye and some training in theater, film history and culture to truly comprehend what comprises a good movie and more difficultly, what makes a good screen performance. The combination of sensitivity and concentration, amazing physical dexterity, humor and charisma are what make The Duke a great actor and a great star.

Until conservatives return to the arts instead of run from them, we will always be at a disadvantage in a liberal world.

Happy 4th to you!

John Wayne, without a doubt.

The Duke is a movie genre all by himself. Hollywood actors can be divided into two categories: John Wayne and everybody else.

My favorite Western movie of all time is “The Outlaw Jose Wales”.

I must have seen “Kelly’s Heroes” more times than I want to admit since I was a little boy when it came out.

Never-the-less, Clint Eastwood played a lot of characters that were like James Bond, sociopathic. John Wayne’s characters were always solidly good guys.

So I vote the Duke!

I love the older actors (Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, et al), but I'm sorry - Clint Eastwood is the best Western actor hands-down.
Even if it was only "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", but there's way more.
