All of those bands are good...but they came along quite a long time after the Beatles didn’t they? Somebody ushered rock and roll into the US but it wasn’t them.
I have yet to hear a lot of covers by other artists of these bands hits.
(Rush??? Man are ya kidding me?)
Really? Think they sell as much music as the Beatles? Think Hendrix comes close to the Beatles in music sold or in wide spread popularity?
I think not. (BTW- I am a HUGE Hendrix fan)
I have one of those too, when I hear it, and several others from the Band’s repertoire. Heh.
The wife and I saw him two years ago in Nashville on his 72nd birthday. We saw him last Thursday in Tunica, MS. Seen him two other times. He, along with those in his All-Starr band make god an enjoyable two hours. They’re coming back to this area in October and the wife and I will spend a couple more hours with him. Happy birthday, Ringo. Hope you have many more.
Ringo Starr certified NICE guy!
A lot of us would beg to differ.
“Really?”
Yes.
“Think they sell as much music as the Beatles?”
No. And that doesn’t mean the Beatles are not overrated.
“Think Hendrix comes close to the Beatles in music sold or in wide spread popularity?”
No, but does that mean George Harrison was a better guitarist than Hendrix? No, of course not. Hendrix is not overrated as a guitarist. The Beatles are overrated as a band. That doesn’t mean the Beatles are not the biggest selling band. The one does not change the other.
“I think not. (BTW- I am a HUGE Hendrix fan)”
Then you should be able to see the obvious. We would both agree - I suppose - that Hendrix was a better guitarist in his sleep than any of the Beatles. Right? Does that mean that Hendrix was overrated? No, not in the least. Now, The Beatles sold many more albums than Hendrix. Does that mean that the Beatles were NOT overrated? No, it doesn’t.
Frank Zappa said this band , The Shaggs , were better than The Beatles . You and he have something in common lol !

“...make god an enjoyable...”
That should have read “make FOR an enjoyable”. Typing on an iPhone and made a huge error. My apologies.
Overrated? Hardly— I use to practice guitar to the Beatles songs and they had some amazing chord patterns and awesome melodies. The Beatles appeared to a wide spectrum of the audience and their music at times crossed generational boundaries. Take a song like. ‘Til there was you’. The WW2 generation loved that song as an example. Cant really say that of the Rolling Stones.
I have nothing in common with Zappa. And he was VASTLY overrated.
It’s very difficult to really know exactly how to rate the Beatles - whether they’re overrated, underrated, or rated just right. Their cultural influence is so enormous that focusing on the music itself can sometimes be difficult.
I’d say this: Paul McCartney was and is a legitimate musical genius. To dispute this is to admit that you (the royal you) don’t know anything about music.
John Lennon was a truly gifted songwriter with a fine voice. Not a musical genius, but a tremendous talent.
I don’t have too much good to say about George Harrison, but he did write some good songs and made a lot of good songs better.
Ringo was the absolute perfect drummer for that band. He served the songs, and that was all that needed to be done for such wonderful songs. A Charlie Watts or, God forbid, a Keith Moon would’ve detracted from the songs with their showiness. He wasn’t the greatest drummer (He wasn’t “even the best drummer in the Beatles” according to Lennon, and that’s probably true), but he did exactly what was necessary.
The Beatles were a truly wonderful group. Any bitching about them being overrated is beside the point, I think. They set the tone for just about everything that came after them for 20-plus years. That should tell you everything you need to know about what their peers and their musical offspring thought about them.
Zappa— excellent musician and guitar player. Very genius but very weird. Really liked his Hot Rats album and his guitar solo on Willie the Pimp is otherworldly. But who sings Zappa songs at weddings or anniversaries?
“Take a song like. Til there was you. The WW2 generation loved that song as an example.”
Because it’s from the Music Man and The Beatles slowed WAY DOWN to play it. You did know that the song is NOT from The Beatles, right? They simply made a cover of it.
“I dont have too much good to say about George Harrison, but he did write some good songs and made a lot of good songs better.”
Pretty good guitarist actually.
Thank you .
So what—they made that song fairly popular and many enjoyed their version of it.
Take Paul’s song ‘The Long and Winding Road’...hauntingly beautiful melody and background vocals as well. That song is a work of art dear Vlad—but we all have our opinions.
Happy birthday to my favorite Beatle.
He was pretty good, but his songwriting often tended toward the banal (not always, though. He wrote some stellar songs) and his singing was not so hot and he was somewhat dour. He was good enough, but compared to Lennon and McCartney, he was second rate.
Which may be unfair. Most are second rate compared to Lennon and McCartney.
Just to expose my prejudices, I’m a huge, gigantic fan of mid 60s folk rock and the Byrds are maybe my favorite group ever. So the stuff from Help through Revolver is pretty much my favorite music of all time.
