HOUSTON -- Actress Skye McCole Bartusiak, who portrayed Mel Gibson's young daughter in the 2000 film "The Patriot," died in her Houston home, her mother said Sunday. She was 21.

The article reports that her parents say she didn’t drink or do drugs and lived in a garage apartment with her parents. Found “unresponsive” by her boyfriend.

She was epileptic. She was sitting up when found and appears that she had a seizure and no one around to assist.
I had read the same thing earlier, and now I can’t find that.
I can’t recall but it may have been in some of the local papers we get. From Wiki:

Helen McCole Bartusiak said Skye had recently been suffering from epileptic seizures and that this likely played a role in her death.
I know...was the boyfriend sitting up in her bed? I just report the news, I don’t write it, smiling.
Likely not, he would have called for aid when the seizure began. RIP. Not every young death is caused by violence or substance abuse.

One of the dangers in an epileptic seizeure, besides hitting nearby objects during the shaking that occurs, is choking from swallowing your tongue. And if she was found sitting upright, this might have been a contributing factor.
Regardless, way to young to die. RIP.
hate to bust your bubble, but you can’t “swallow your tongue”. In the past this lead to a lot of oral trauma as people broke teeth in order to keep the tongue from being “swallowed”. She may have aspirated, maybe had hypoxia and cardiac arrest...or foul play.
Only repeating what doctors told me years ago when I had four seizures, from petit mal to grand mal, and was diagnosed with an idiopathic seizure disorder.
I suppose the “swallowing” wasn’t literal, but rather referred to collapsing down into the throat area and blocking the airway. Doctors told me that first responders should turn my head, or that of any person experiencing a seizure, to prevent the tongue from falling back into the throat area.
But regardless of the reason, it’s too young to die.
