A 33-year-old American doctor working for a relief organization in Liberia's capital has tested positive for the tropical disease Ebola, according to a statement from Samaritan's Purse.
Dr. Kent Brantly, medical director at one of the country's two treatment centers run by the organization, recognized his own symptoms and confined himself to an isolation ward.
It was not immediately clear how he caught Ebola. The relief group's Melissa Strickland said that he had followed strict safety protocols when treating patients.
"It's too early to try to explain it. We will have an intensive and thorough investigation," she said.
Across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, at least 660 people have died from the illness, according to the World Health Organisation, as poor, ill-equipped African governments have struggled to cope with the virus.

This, on the heels of a popular doctor in Sierra Leone catching the disease.
It is a dangerous disease. I know that health care workers are supposed to cover themselves completely with protective clothing, but I wonder if that is enough. Laboratory workers wear spacesuits to research the virus, maybe that is the only safe way to be around it.
I wish the best for this doctor.
Prayer’s up for this brave doctor.
Oh No -Prayers.
Prayers for this doctor who devoted himself to bringing relief to the suffering. May God find a way to heal him.
Has the missing patient zero shown up yet either
at the Mexican border or escorted directly by DH”S”?
i believe Dr. Kent Brantly is from ft. worth texas
i hope he’s under quarantine
Mutation .... that’s a word they should become familiar with.
Another medical professional - a European, I believe - died of it in Lagos last week.
“Mutation .... thats a word they should become familiar with.”
“Africa wins again” should be considered before departing for Africa.
The way the article reads, it should like he placed himself in quarantine in Liberia.
I believe his wife, and two children just returned to TX a day or two ago to visit family. There’s no mention of her husband contracting the disease on the brantleybunch.com.
His wife, Amber assisted with meals at the hospital/ELWA.
His children are very young. The Brantleys are extremely devout Christians.
Even more info, he’s married with 2 little kids.
No good deed goes unpunished.
That’s really too bad.
I hope God is merciful to someone like this.
Thanks for posting that link. This is just so sad. Beautiful young family.
From the blog link you posted....
Kent was scheduled to arrive in Texas this week for a much needed break; to attend the wedding, and meet our son. His wife (Geoff’s sister) Amber and their kids arrived back in Texas last week ahead of him.....
....Please join us in fervent, immediate prayer. Please share this with as many as you know as we call on the Great Physician to bring HIS comfort and healing for our brother. In all things may HE be glorified.
Am I correct in thinking this is the second doctor who has contracted ebola? Something is starting to smell.
“Dr. Kent Brantly, medical director at one of the country’s two treatment centers run by the organization, recognized his own symptoms and confined himself to an isolation ward.”
Good for him. I pray this guy gets better.
prayers up. Let God be with him.
Yes. Another doctor was diagnosed on Wednesday. Several other health care workers have contracted Ebola and many have died.
This is a nasty disease. The fatality rate during this outbreak is not as bad as in past outbreaks, but it is still around 60%.
I’m praying for both doctors.
We’re one plane ticket away from it being spread here.
Let's hope ebola hasn't gone airborne.
Prayers going up for Dr. Kent and his family.
He ought to come back to HealthyLand, USA and restore his immune system to something resembling normal.
Wonderful line from Dirty Harry...and often so true.
Sad to say, but in a way it is good the mortality rate is so high. It dies off before it can spread far.
Just heard on Foxnews that this doctor contracted the virus on an airplane from Nigeria to Liberia from a business man.
Indeed. In general, the more deadly a disease is, the more likely it is to kill off its victims before it spreads far.
I will not discuss the details, but in Africa, one of the ways that Ebola spreads is through the way they prepare bodies for funerals. Another is that they will eat dead animals that they find. So this disease actually gets some help to spread.
Prayers up for this doc.
He is in the Elwa hospital just outside Monrovia. I visited that hospital a few years ago, it seemed to be one of the few facilities of anykind that actually worked properly in that country.
I suspect Obama would love to fly him back to the United States... but the good doctor needs to stay right where he is...
Obama will trade 4 detainees for each doctor with Ebola.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
The first doctor who contracted ebola has passed away.
Which one (dr) was that? Thanks.

...Sorry. I not computer illiterate. Found this but I thought a doctor passed away at the beginning of last week.
He is a faithful member of the church of Christ.
Hope the wife and kids have been tested.
