Oregon district halts condom giveaway to 6th graders amid community uproar

GERVAIS, Ore. – Unhappy parents have forced an Oregon school board to re-think its plan to begin handing out condoms to students – sixth-graders on up – when school starts up again this fall.

During a May meeting, school board members approved a plan in which trained teachers (presumably health teachers) would hand out prophylactics after first having “a discussion with the student,” StatesmanJournal.com reports. Some of those students could have been as young as 11 years old.

But when parents and community members caught wind of the “condoms-upon-request” plan, they flooded a June board meeting to express their displeasure.

“Some members of the public were offended that schools were stepping into the parents’ territory of addressing their children’s sexuality, according to minutes of the June board meeting,” StatesmanJournal.com reports.

You may notice that the writer tries to belittle the vast number of interested members of the public by using the words “Some Members of the public.”

Well of course the entire community is not going to show up at the school board meeting to address the issue of pubescent sex and birth control. But obviously an unusual number of citizens did show up to address an issue which is totally out of bounds for public officials and particularly school boards.

I will also say; why would the voting public want their school board deciding to inject themselves in to an issue for which they have not the slightest personal or institutional responsibility for the outcome?

If the child becomes or is responsible for a pregnancy neither the councilor nor the school board is on the hook for the cost of the pregnancy, medical care or post-partum care of the mother and the cost of raising the child is someone else’s problem.

If they have no stake in the outcome of the issue they should stay out of it. For the school board and the staff it is a feel good ideological game. We know these kids better than their parents so we should be telling these kids how to survive puberty.

This is a high “hispanic” area...glad the Board got the message....that parents even had to TELL them is disappointing to say the least. Wonder if they have Planned Parenthood in the schools, too....like some Oregon schools do.

what the hell happened to grade school teaching things like arithmetic, English, history, geography.....if one was a super “A” plus student...there might be time to mention sexuality........otherwise NO!!!

Look at the demographics. In almost every system where they want to pass out condoms it looks like this:

• Hispanic - 1,653 (67.1%)
• White alone - 715 (29.0%)
• Two or more races - 42 (1.7%)
• American Indian alone - 21 (0.9%)

• Asian alone - 13 (0.5%)
• Other race alone - 6 (0.2%)
