I’ve been to around 50 Sprint Car races over the years. Outlaw/Sprint Cars are ALWAYS hitting the throttle during caution. They let off, coast, then gun it, then coast, then gun it. They all do.

Nothing sinister in this practice. I have no idea what happened last night intention wise though.

I agree. As fast as things happened, I don’t believe Tony Stewart had any time to react one way or the other.

Pretty sure the protocol after your collision with the wall is to either remain in your vehicle or exit and retreat to safety, not walk out exposed onto the racetrack and confront other drivers squirreling around the track at what must be close to 100mph — on dirt!

Sprint cars need the throttles punched at low speeds to keep the engines running.

good info on Sprint Cars for those posting in this thread. They are crazy fast, lighter than an Indy Car with as much horse (or close).

I’ve seen video of good race drivers get into an Outlaw car for the first time and they are freaked out.

I’m not speculating that it was a game of chicken because I don’t think that Ward was directly in front of the car. You do.

Sprint cars "stagger" the rear tires. Meaning the right rear is taller than the left rear. This aids them in turning left. If you stomp on the gas, the car will immediately shoot to the left. I don't believe for a second that Tony intentionally ran the kid over. He was trying to avoid him.

Also a good shot showing how low they run the right panel in the wing. Visibility towards any angle to the right is next to nothing.

I am saddened that the deceased driver put himself in harms way.

Looked to me like Tony saw his right rear was going to hit the kid so he steered right and gunned it to slide the rear end away from him. But the kid was too close.

These days, I'm a half-hearted NASCAR fan but I have never liked hot-headed drivers. They are a danger to everyone on the track (including themselves). At one time, Tony Stewart was one of the worst but he mellowed over time.

As someone who is at best indifferent about Stewart, I agree with your analysis. A professional driver is likely to try to avoid an immediate collision by throttle steering the car. I don't like to blame the dead guy but I think that he was far more in the wrong than Stewart.

Yes, they do, but not near where the caution area is. Too much going on in that area to do so.

This from TMZ (yes, do consider the source):

Investigators collected ZERO video from Tony Stewart and Kevin Ward Jr.'s race teams after Saturday night's tragedy because the Sheriff says it does not exist -- which TMZ Sports has learned is a little strange.
Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero tells TMZ Sports they checked Stewart's #14 sprint car -- and Ward's #13 -- to see if there was mini-cam footage of the moment the NASCAR superstar barreled into Ward ... but came up with zilch.
It's odd because we're told -- by multiple sources in the racing world -- Stewart commonly has a mini-camera of some sort mounted on his cars when he races on smaller dirt tracks like Canandaigua. We've made multiple calls to Stewart's racing teams, but have not heard back.
The sheriff also told us there were no recordings of communication between Stewart and his pit crew -- though our sources say that's standard ops for a small race not airing on TV.
That lack of evidence perhaps explains why the sheriff has made several pleas to the public for any footage of the incident. It's simply not clear from the YouTube footage already out there if Stewart was reckless.

MSM is making this accident into a murder story intentionally.

Bottom line, motor sports will eventually fall as NFL will due to pressure from the Left.

In the mean time motor sports will be pushed to limit their racing vehicles to electric powered with large soft bumpers and speeds not above 10 mph.
