But instead of making the short drive to a hospital near her home in Munster, Indiana, she drove alone for more than 40 minutes to one in neighboring Illinois. Quasney said she was “terrified” her local hospital might not allow her and her partner of more than 13 years, whom she wed last year in another state, to be together if she suffered a health emergency.

Where do people get this idea that when they go to the hospital, they can’t tell the hospital who they want to be allowed to visit. Apparently a lot of people think the hospital is going to interrogate visitors to find out if they are gay, and if they are married to the patient.
The true goal here is to inject fear and trauma into normal couples’ lives vis-a-vis forcing hospitals to demand all power of attorney or living will paperwork for EVERYONE.
My advice is to just avoid hospitals completely.
A friend of my wife had a stroke (and ultimately died) a few years ago, and “the whole gang” went in to visit her at the hospital every day.
I don’t believe they were ever asked if they were “family”.
Ever notice when they talk about a gay couple, they always feel the need to tell us how long they’ve been together? They don’t say, “Mr and Mrs Smith, who’ve been married for...”

I guess her partner of thirteen years had other things to do.
She said she was terrified, but she had an ongoing health concern with a likely visit to the hospital at some point. “Interesting” that she didn’t check with the closest hospital ahead of time and ask them what would be acceptable documentation. It’s so much more effective to claim fear for the cause.

true. This has always been a manufactured non-concern, concern since the AIDS issue back in the 80’s. They say that since they are not directly related, they can’t get in to the ICU because it’s “immediate family only” policies but it might have happened once or twice, with a lot of fanfare and the hospitals since changed their policies.
It’s a case where popular culture representation has made something appear much more prevalent than it is in reality so people believe it’s happening when it’s not.
This is all the MSM can come up with for a gay rights sob story? What about the doctor who said "we don't treat queers here." Or the nurse wearing a cross who gave her a dirty look? Come on, MSM, you can do better than this!
The reality is that this Quasney needs to open her eyes and look around the world. In most of the world, she would be getting her head sawed off if someone found out she was a lesbian. That is what she should be "terrified" of; not this nonsense.

That has always perplexed me. Hospitals have visitation hours and I have never been questioned when visiting someone.
Gee, maybe this looming, all encompassing fear will scare them straight?
Ever notice how the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), bull**** has just gone away now that the “openly gay” homos are allowed to get married? Everyone’s health information is now available to anyone who wants it. The HIPAA hors**** was nothing but a scam and something developed for the homos who needed an excuse to be allowed to get “married”. IMHO!

ANYONE can direct a hospital to allow a person into the hospital room. If they are that worried they can use one of the FREE (not cost, common as dirt) health care surrogate forms that address such situations.
This is all about sexual fetishist being the same. So what next? if they are “really fond” of animals they have to allow farm animals into the hospital too?

Wait until gays can get married in every state and benefits are restricted to married partners, no “domestic partners” allowed. Boy will they pitch a fit.
