North Dakota: Legendary Among States. Residents happy with the economy, education, air quality

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- "Oil boom" is probably the first phrase that comes to mind when one thinks about North Dakota. Yet North Dakotans see their state as much more than oil. They are highly satisfied with their schools, their air quality, their ability to find a quality job, and their overall standard of living. In Gallup's comprehensive survey of all 50 states, North Dakota ranks No. 1 on a variety of indicators spanning economics, public affairs, education, the environment, and well-being. In 2014, North Dakota is a complex, thriving state that is adapting rapidly to the economic and social factors that are transforming this population of roughly 725,000 people.

These findings are based on a special 50-state Gallup poll conducted June-December 2013, including interviews with approximately 600 residents in every state.

North Dakotans are more likely than residents of any other state to say that their state's economic conditions are excellent or good, that the state's economy is getting better, and that they have not lacked money for adequate housing in the last 12 months. In addition, more residents than anywhere else say it is a good time to find a quality job and that their state is a good place for people starting a new business.

You mean North Dakota doesn’t buy anything imported?

I mean North Dakota currently has (I believe) the United States’ lowest unemployment rate of any state.

Unemployment is a huge problem, and we all contribute by buying imported everything.

Bring back American jobs.

Sure, but I don’t think it has anything to do with their buying imported goods. Their Wal-Mart stores still have things made in China.

It is their ENLIGHTENED tax and regulatory policies that made their state boom. Something every other state should emulate.

I disagree.

America has sold out. We as a nation no longer make things.

We just import ever more crap from China, which continues to become ever-stronger and is now challenging America globally.

Sorry but we have for an entire generation been on the wrong path.

America needs to LEAD. We don’t lead, when we’re busy selling our nation out to a massive communist competitor.

We are going the wrong way.

GOP stand up for America.

Big business has slapped American brand names on imported copies from China. Visited the docks in downtown Seattle or Oakland lately ?

RE: America has sold out. We as a nation no longer make things.

Let’s talk about North Dakota, since you know that they have very low unemployment...

Where do you think they get the machines to drill their oil and frack their gas?

Partly made in the US and partly made overseas.

That is what we call DIVISION of LABOR.

COST ADVANTAGE.

That’s what makes their energy industry thrive -— low regulations, reasonable taxes and cost control.

Start with that and you’ll see things being made in America ( whenever it is cost attractive )

No kidding. North Dakota? There is a reason the pioneers kept moving west.

I love visiting Grand Forks...in the summer. I’m not a fan of our Minnesota winters, but North Dakota kicks it up a notch.

I lived in North Dakota from 1964-1988 with brief breaks for college, service, etc. One of their secrets is that you are either gainfully employed or you freeze to death. It is no place for slackards.

I don’t care how good their economy is. I won’t live in a state where you have to carry survival gear in case your car break down.
