Baby Elephant Takes A Tumble; Grown-Ups Rush To Its Aid (See it to believe it)
Huffington Post ^ | October 2, 2014 | Sarah Barness

When a baby elephant fell over while trying to climb out of a small ditch at Switzerland's Zoo Zürich, two adults rushed over within a few seconds to help.

Footage of the event, which took place at the zoo's new Kaeng Krachan elephant house, was uploaded to YouTube on Aug. 6. Though it's not clear from the video whether the baby's mother is one of the adults that comes to its aid, elephants are known to have tight bonds with herd members outside their immediate family.

Mother and calf share a special connection, but adults have been known to watch over little ones that aren't theirs. Other members of the clan may act as babysitters, a practice that helps young female elephants prepare for motherhood.

Zoo Zürich's elephant facility was named for the Kaeng Krachan National Park in Thailand, where the Swiss zoo supports the conservation of Asiatic elephants. As part of the effort, the zoo helps work toward resolving the "human-elephant conflict" by putting up protective fences to keep wild elephants from damaging plantation grounds.

It must have really bothered HuffPooh that elephants react so fast and so effectively.

Very cute.

Just for fun I clicked on the link to the story about the 35,000 walruses coming in Alaska and two more stories popped up side by side.

One is headlined, "Antarctic Sea Ice Just Hit A New Maximum" and the other reads, "What States' Attorneys General Can Do About Climate Deniers".

Needless to say, I clicked on neither. I just left. I could feel my brain cells dying from boredom just by being on HufferPo's website.

I can't afford that luxury.

Here’s the direct link to YOUTUBE so that those of us who prefer not to visit the HUFFPO can still watch the video.

Re: Post #6 — Oops. That second line should read 35,000 walruses coming ashore in Alaska, not coming in Alaska. That would be gross. ‘Course that would make for an exciting evening for your typical HufferPoseur.

I just focused on the quick responding elephants. These lovely beasts react fastr than President Obola. It must have ticked the Huffpooh very much, but it the animals reaction was so fast. Awesome!

Thanks, Chgogal...I needed that! Great way to close out the evening.

I read a great deal about elephant “culture” a couple of years ago. They are pretty amazing.

Those elephants must not be Democrats/Liberals. They didn’t yell and scream for the Zoo Keeper to come and do something.

Yeah. I try to get away from such websites as quickly as possible. I don’t want my ‘puter catching the digital version of Ebola. Huffbola?

Notice how after the ordeal, the adults form a protective shield around the youngster. Too bad humans often are so callous toward the smallest and weakest of our species. I’m convinced that most animals are better parents to their young than many humans.
