MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama voters have approved a constitutional amendment to make gun ownership a fundamental right.

The measure called Amendment 3 won easily in statewide balloting Tuesday.

The Republican-backed amendment used language from the National Rifle Association.

The measure would make owning firearms a fundamental right in Alabama. It would also require that measures to control firearms would have to pass the toughest review by state courts.

They have bears in Alabama?

We do in central FL, and they get to keep their arms too.

It's a shame the “universal background check” initiative passed in Washington state, (though it is completely unenforceable and will, for the most part, be ignored like the one in Colorado.) The good news is, with the makeup of the new congress, there is not a snowballs chance that this or any other gun control bill will make it through at the national level.

Will Alabama get to Alaska-type conceal carry laws after this?

There is no need for a constitutional amendment to make gun ownership a “fundamental” right.

It has always been one.

yep. America just hit the E brake on the progressive agenda. Now would be a great time to go on the offensive, to go for the game winning touchdown on this particular issue-for the sake of future generations.

Is there something wrong with legislation that reaffirms and strengthens this right? I’m tired of playing defense. I like the idea of playing some offense.

Not if you ax me. Pass it in every state IMO, even if it's already in the State constitution.

Just to make a point.

yep. Pretty sure nobody ever won a war by going on the defense. It is time to attack.

Alabama voters have approved a constitutional amendment to make gun ownership a fundamental right.

It was already a national right. But welcome to the party.

It seemed to GOTV if nothing else but it still seems prudent to preemptively strengthen the pro-second amendment language written into our state constitutions and codes where possible before the enemy has the opportunity to undermine the pro-second amendment language written into our state constitutions and codes.

there is not a snowballs chance that this or any other gun control bill will make it through at the national level.

Which is why the Left are going piecemeal via the states, as in Washington. Small steps, small steps. Nevada is next, with the bogus "86% Nevadans Approve of a Background Check" meme.

It seems to me the NRA, et al, should steal a march on these people and propose a BC initiative all their own, with that one one ONLY checking the person's criminal or mental background via some kind of existing photo ID and WITHOUT the Form 4473 that registers every firearm.

Most non-gun owners don't give a crap about the registration/confiscation angle, they just want "safety" and the Left wins by promising them that.

There was much opposition to this by Bama Carry, one of the state concealed carry organizations. It basically came down to "since the other carry group is for it, we are again' it." That's called voting against your own self-interest.

Glad Alabamians ignored them.

There is no need for a constitutional amendment to make gun ownership a “fundamental” right.

Until activist judges decide that your "fundamental" right to keep and bear arms is trumped by "public safety". It has happened recently in North Carolina. This amendment means to prevent it.

Back in 1968, when the 1968 Gun control at was passed, it forbade citizens from buying guns and ammo over state lines unless bordering states allowed it WITH a sheriff’s permission.

Many states immediately passed such laws allowing their citizens to buy long guns in bordering states, including ALASKA which has no other states bordering it.

Handguns still cannot be bought across state lines.

It seems crazy that I have to fill out a form and do a background check to buy a pistol from a dealer yet I cannot do it 2 states away.
