"
That kind of attack can be accomplished without any kind of a control software hack. The vulnerability that article is about is not in the control software."
There are eleven paragraphs about that under "
So what is SCADA?" (Jeffrey Yago, P.E., CEM, "Why you need to add solar to your emergency power backup plans"). Didn't you read it?

OK it worked twice, once in 1982 in Russia then Stuxnet in Iran. I knew about both of those. Any other examples? I mean this Trojan is alleged to be infecting control software for “industrial operations like oil and gas pipelines, power transmission grids, water distribution and filtration systems, wind turbines and even some nuclear plants” since 2011 all over in NATO Europe and the USA.

Yes I read it. I know what SCADA is, I work in the power industry. The California substation attack had nothing to do with SCADA. It was not a “software” attack.

I believe its worked more than once on Iran.
That’s the problem with people. They think just because it has never happened it can’t and here is something that has happened and some still don’t believe it can’t. I am not saying that this particular Trojan can, but give time someone will, can and has come up with something.
If I would have told you say in 1999 that terrorist would bring down both towers of the World Trade Center for the cost of some flying lessons, some one way tickets and some box knifes you would have looked at me like I was wearing a tin foil hat.
Terrorist are the masters of the cheap sucker punch.
Can you imagine what the Pentagon budge would have been and the manpower involve if they had planned a operation like 9/11?

Well done, and that's one fat private power plant! :-)
I have a tiny one installed miles too far from the nearest power company lines, but the components, cables, grounds, switches, etc., are among the best after a few years' study.

True. Sadly, our country is buzzing with un-assimilated folks not long descended from cultures antithetical to American culture. It seems that anyone willing to bring much money or put up with un-American abuse is welcome.

And the thousands of people who rely on electricity to keep their medications at proper temperature, run their oxygen machines, etc. Unfortunately, it’s not just the parasites that would suffer.
I would be in a foul mood in the middle of a Florida August with no A/C. :)

Actually I wouldn’t have. I understood the possibility existed even before I read it in Tom Clancy’s “Debt of Honor”. Too many in government haven’t learned to think like our enemies. They seem to be the main ones thinking it can’t happen here or it won’t happen because it hasn’t happened before.

I work for a state correctional facility and our security fence is run by a Windows 95 based Pentium 1 PC because it has the ISA slot that is needed to run the comm card.
Fortunately an upgrade should be complete by the years end.

Without going into specifics, which obviously I cannot, there are dedicated real-time teams devoted to maintaining security.
I am hard to impress.

The article makes an allegation with very little proof, and there is very little proof of the threat being offered here. Lets say their was solid proof the alleged threat existed. The article gets publish, the “public” becomes “aware” of the “threat”. The public then and decides to use “politics” and “political pressure” - what would that look like? Political pressure to do what? What kind of solutions would an “aware” public offer to counter this alleged threat?
