Word For The Day, Monday, 12/15/14

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

quale; noun

noun, plural qualia [kwah-lee-uh, kwey-] 1: a property (as redness) considered apart from things having the property : universal 2: a property as it is experienced as distinct from any source it might have in a physical object Qualia is a term used in philosophy to refer to individual instances of subjective, conscious experience. The term derives from the Latin adverb quālis (Latin pronunciation: [ˈkwaːlis]) meaning "what sort" or "what kind". Examples of qualia are the pain of a headache, the taste of wine, or the perceived redness of an evening sky.

Daniel Dennett (b. 1942), American philosopher and cognitive scientist, writes that qualia is "an unfamiliar term for something that could not be more familiar to each of us: the ways things seem to us."[1]

Erwin Schrödinger (1887–1961), the famous physicist, had this counter-materialist take:

The sensation of color cannot be accounted for by the physicist's objective picture of light-waves. Could the physiologist account for it, if he had fuller knowledge than he has of the processes in the retina and the nervous processes set up by them in the optical nerve bundles and in the brain? I do not think so.[2]

The importance of qualia as a concept in the philosophy of mind comes largely from the fact that it is seen as posing a fundamental problem for materialist explanations of the mind-body problem. Much of the debate over their importance hinges on the definition of the term that is used, as various philosophers emphasize or deny the existence of certain features of qualia. As such, the nature and existence of qualia are controversial

Etymology:"death, destruction," Old English cwalu, cognate with Old Norse kval "torment, torture," from a variant of the root of quell.

Who can account for qualia
When seeing the red of Obama
The left doesn't care
That we despair
For our country we have nostalgia.

The qualia of daily life for the poor is often difficult to comprehend for those of us who are blessed to be employed.

A+++ yes, we thank God for jobs. I do not countenance those who gripe about their’s because all should consider themselves lucky to be employed.

My wife and I spent dinner on Friday evening talking about how we’re always hearing the media bray about how the poor are so poor and the rich are so rich. We’re neither, but we’re blessed to have what we have. It’s just hard to understand, and I volunteer at local food pantries a few times a month. I’ve seen the homeless and destitute.

Believing in God is a quale
That our Founders secured without fail
But the A.C.L.U.
Wants each Christian and Jew
Who proclaims it to be put in jail

The ballsy president of Lithuania, is dogged by the quale of her supposed "Komsomol fervor."

My example, somewhat delayed, as I have now consumed a bit of coffee.

The old Norse menfolk suffered qualia
a result of bad wine, left too long in barrels
while
they split others heads for loot and booty
sitting with pinched rears on long
narrow seats in Viking boats were a
pain in the rear
hangover from being overhung - torment indeed
