TORONTO Canadian entertainment icon Don Harron is dead at the age of 90 after a battle with cancer.
Harron entertained generations of Canadians with his comic alter ego Charlie Farquharson and helped bring the Canadian classic novel Anne of Green Gables from the page to the stage.
His eldest daughter Martha said her father died Saturday morning surrounded by family at his Toronto home after choosing not to seek treatment for cancer.
The wit and humour that landed him roles on C-B-C radio programs and television programs shows such as the American variety show Hee Haw continued to define her father to the very end.
Perhaps Harrons most celebrated work was accomplished behind the scenes when he helped create the musical version of Anne of Green Gables, the Lucy Maud Montgomery classic about a red-haired orphan living on Prince Edward Island.
Harron joined forces with Norman and Elaine Campbell and Mavor Moore to turn the beloved novel into a CBC television production in 1955.
Well, there goes another piece of my childhood. R.I.P. Don.
He was one of the best parts of hee haw.
Rip
One of my favorite sayings the Don had as Charle was : “Those politicians are so dishonest that if they all swallowed nails they would pass screws.”
To all- please ping me to Canadian topics.
Canada Ping!
He might have worded that phrase in a more comical way...I'll leave it up to everyone’s imagination. I loved the way he fractured the language.
I watched “Hee Haw” a lot when I was young and what an act he had.
A lot of Canadians came down here over the years to minor acclaim and major acclaim like Lorne Green, Lorne Michaels, Leslie Nielsen, James Doohan of the classic “Star Trek”, not to mention Captain Kirk himself (William Shatner) and the list goes on.
Oh that is too funny! And true...good laugh on that one...thanks for posting it. Rotflol!
Loved Charlie, loved the whole Hee Haw gang.
Condolences to family and friends of Don Harron.
RIP.
