US travelers set for EU biometric dragnet
EU Observer ^ | 19 Feb, 2015, 18:02 | Nikolaj Nielsen

US citizens and other non-EU nationals who enter Europe will be asked to have their faces image-captured and fingerprints scanned upon arrival at a half-dozen major airports.

The biometric dragnet is part of a pilot test of the EU’s so-called “smart borders” package. Passengers can refuse to give the data for now, but there are plans to eventually make it obligatory.

A draft internal EU document dated Wednesday (18 February) and seen by this website says the “proof of concept” is set to start in March and will run until September this year. “Should traveler participation be lower than expected, there would be a high risk that the results of the tests would be biased or would not reflect reality,” notes the multi-million euro project.

Although the launch date is set in a matter of weeks, the document is still in the draft stage and so test places may change. However, the document lists Arlanda (Sweden), Charles de Gaulle (France), Frankfurt (Germany), Lisbon (Portugal), Madrid (Spain), and Schiphol (Netherlands) as participating airports. …

Muslims with French Citizenship will not be subject to this screening, but tourists from Poughkeepsie will.

Makes sense to me. /sarc

No matter what system someone devises, someone else will beat it. The real issue is thinking you have a secure system when unknown access may be made through social engineering or otherwise.

That's no far from he truth. When my Dad was in his 80's he was basically wheelchair-bound.In addition he looked every bit his age,if not older. When we'd fly down to Florida in the winter so he could get some sunshine the TSA would *invariably* stop him, make him stand up (which was difficult for him) and they'd frisk him and wave that metal detector over him.

I was outraged when they did that but kept it to myself so that I wasn't subjected to a beat-down.

As an 82 year old woman I can sympathize.

Just curious...did your Dad ever object to this treatment?

Many my age can be very crotchety.

No,not at all.My Dad was always an easy going guy, difficult to upset. In his later years he was easy to please....a nice warm place and a piece of chocolate cake and he was happy as a clam. ;-)

He was quite a guy!
