At some point in this development....when it’s some snow and ice out there...your driver-less car will be activated by you and the desire will be a trip into work. The car will get the latest weather report, road status, and measure the temp and situation...then tell you that it is not safe to leave the driveway. If you try to override the car decision...it’ll likely send an email to your insurance company, your wife, and your minister about your unsafe decision. Whether you like or not...the car will keep you safe but highly frustrated.

Also consider how accident rates will drop substantially, and car insurance....even for a 18-year-old kid....might be just a hundred bucks a year.

Out of reach of many people pricewise but that’s OK, they simply don’t want self drivers on their roads.

Self-driving cars could eliminate 90% of all personal freedom in the United States.

SWAT teams serving warrants would wither away. Your car will just deliver you to the popo station when they want you.

A “self driving” car is when “my-self” is driving it.

This would be a “government driven” car and I do not want one.

Get out the vote would be more effective. Your car would take you only to the polls on voting days.

I’ll take one as long as I have a manual override.

And I’m mechanically and electrically self-educated enough to know and verify that I have such an override and it cannot be overridden.

Liberals love mass transit. Obama tried to force rail down our throats, wasting billions.

Driverless cars will be the mass transit that liberals dreamt about.

I can see the private ownership of cars being outlawed or highly restricted. If you need a car, you request one and it will be there for you. Perhaps in rural areas, you will keep a publicly owned car in your driveway. If your calendar does not show a need, it can be summoned by your neighbors. Your car will be replaced with another as soon as possible.

All movements will be tracked. Trucks will be the same if you need to haul things from Home Depot...but Home Depot will pay for those trucks.

Who will pay for these cars? Your employer, of course! If you need to get to work, a car will come and get you and pick up your co-workers. Car pooling will be mandatory. Once at work, that car can be used by seniors and the unemployed to go to the bingo hall or score the heroin they need to get through the day.

Maybe in the next 50 years this might be practical for a very few applications. Maybe semi's on the interstate might have a GPS auto pilot mode. City buses might have auto pilot. Those silly buses at airports might have auto pilot.

Look you take the metro rail in DC and they have a human in the front car, why? If that cant be automated then what can?

A dandy opportunity for Big Government to control your movements, your rate of speed, your expenditure of fuel. They would also know how many within your neighborhood had a similar destination and require you to be driven together.

Freedom of movement disappears, but of course, we’re all so much safer.

Your government regulated and approved auto-driver will safely deliver you to California from Florida at a nice safe 45mph, with no more than 8 hours of travel, and 4 mandatory stops at government approved organic veggie stands.
