CUERNAVACA, Mexico Some unusual guests showed up to pay their respects at a recent funeral in Mexico a pack of stray dogs.
According to BuzzFeed, Margarita Suarez of Merida loved animals and fed 20 cats a day. She also took care of stray dogs, her daughter, Patricia Urrutia, told Norte Digital.
Every time she saw a dog in the street, [that] meant going to her house in order to feed it," Urrutia said.
When Suarez died in March, family members gathered for her funeral in Cuernavaca, about 830 miles away from Suarez's home in Merida, the Huffington Post reports. There, something strange happened.
"Out of nowhere, a pack of dogs entered the room where the ceremony was being held and they settled in ... with those who were there," Urrutia said in a Facebook post, according to a Huffington Post translation. "They stayed all night as if they were protecting her. In the morning, they left and haven't been seen anywhere, but one hour before taking Mama away, they came back and visited again like as if to say goodbye. I swear to God that it was something beautiful, marvelous."
Urrutia said her brother-in-law had never seen the dogs before, and the family believes they were paying tribute to Suarez.
Glory to God!
Mexico was still in North America way back when I was in school.
:-)
You are right. I have traveled both to Mexico and Panama and I tend to lump them geographically together.
I was just being a wiseacre. It was a lovely story that I shared with others yesterday. Thanks for posting!
Rhoda, I correspond with the wonderful people who volunteer to spay and neuter dogs and cats in Panama. They are saintly to me.
Let’s keep these poor doggies and kitties in our prayers.
More likely it was feeding time and the strays showed up and found a funeral ceremony. It’s not as if they read the obituaries.
Maybe technically, Central America does not extend into Mexico. But Cuernevara is pretty far south and is considered a key city of “Mesoamerica” per archeologists.
Ping to our dog and cat lovers.
maybe they could smell that this was a funeral of an animal lover... the funeral home was saying that to have stray critters appear was not normal there.
I have had dogs all my life, and while I would like to believe those were street strays, they are far better looking than street dogs in America. Something doesn’t seem right - could those have been dogs belonging to the family members?
“...stray dogs in the streets...”
No wonder so many east asians are moving there.
Very likely as well.
I agree, they look too well fed. Kind of like when you see Confederate Civil War reenactors having tummies hanging over their belts, lol.
When I’m buried, I hope I’ve earned that kind of honor guard.
