Honda says its cars won’t crash after 2040

Taking a page out of Volvo’s playbook, Honda has set a handful of lofty goals for the next 35 years – including eliminating the possibility of its cars crashing.

Speaking to Car and Driver last week at the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress, Honda Americas R&D president Frank Paluch dished detains on a new set of core goals the Japanese automaker hopes to achieve by 2040, but they won’t be happening all at once.

The first step in Honda’s goal will come in 2020, where Paluch says Honda vehicles will be connected one another and to infrastructure, lending to a 50 per cent reduction in collisions involving Honda vehicles.

A decade later in 2030, Honda predicts all road users – cyclists, drivers, pedestrians, motorcycles and, of course, cars – will be virtually connected. This means Honda will be set up to completely eliminate the prospects of collisions in its vehicles by 2040, lending to a number of ideas for more efficient travel on the road – high-speed express lanes reserved for connected cars are just the tip of the iceberg.

I think that Airbus made the same promise some years back when they started designing their aircraft to fly themselves, thus making the pilot a mere spectator.

This may or may not be true, but it also means the average person will not have control over their vehicles. This also likely means you will only be riding your car over designated roadways.

Eventually, cars wont have steering wheels or gas/brake pedals.

You'll just enter/select/say where you want to go, and the vehicle will take you there,...

...provided the authorities approve.

After which you'll never be alone again, whether you like it or not.

I'm trying to figure out how they can make sure that all the pedestrians stay in their proper lanes and crossings and never jaywalk or cross against the light. Well, I guess they could make everyone Japanese.

I guess that what scares me is if cars are all computer controlled then the government will absolutely insist on having the “keys” so they can tell your car what to do when it suits them. Even if that means telling your car to have a convenient accident!

None of this sounds like a good idea.

“Industry lobbyists” and “safety experts” will insure that the benevolent dictators in Washington will get those counter-revolutionary unconnected cars off the road by then.
