Market declines will continue in 2015 as PC growth engines grind to a halt

Shanghai, Palo Alto, Singapore and Reading (UK) –

The global PC market, including tablets, experienced an annual decline of 7% in Q1 2015, reaching 115.7 million units worldwide. Apple held on to first place despite a 16% decline in its total PC shipments. It shipped 17.2 million units, taking a 15% share of the market. Lenovo and HP, second and third place respectively, both saw single-digit shipment growth in Q1 2015 and increases in market share. Samsung narrowly held on to fourth spot as its declining tablet sales led to Dell closing the gap in fifth place. Samsung and Dell took 8.2% shipment market share with 9.5 and 9.4 million units respectively.

‘The growth drivers that previously helped the market through 2014 will have little effect this year. Vendors are struggling with exchange rate fluctuations which is making financial planning more difficult and forcing price increases’, commented Tim Coulling, Canalys Senior Analyst. ‘These challenges, combined with a softening of demand as Windows 10 draws nearer along with Microsoft’s free upgrade plans, means PC market declines will be greater in the second quarter than they were in the first.’

Desktop shipments were hardest hit, falling 13%, with declines affecting all global regions. ‘The desktop category no longer benefits from shipments driven by XP migration’, said Rushabh Doshi, Canalys Analyst. ‘As a result, we expect to see significant shipment declines in 2015 when compared to 2014.’

The notebook market fared better, but after two quarters of falling less than 1%, declines have now increased to 4%. ‘The notebook category faces significant challenges for the rest of the year as Microsoft has restricted the Windows with Bing program to notebooks with sub 14-inch screen sizes. Channel inventory has been building since Microsoft announced the change and this will need to adjust before significant orders return’, continued Doshi. ‘Any price rises for Windows notebooks will play into the hands of Google who is making strides in improving Chrome OS for both consumers and businesses.’

The tablet market declined around 9% year-on-year to 45.6 million units, with market leaders Samsung and Apple experiencing double-digit shipment declines as demand for the category has cooled. ‘The rapid growth in the tablet market has caused markets in Western Europe and North America to become highly penetrated and shipment volumes have started to decline. Growth in these markets now relies on consumer replacements or increasing business purchases, neither of which looks likely to pick up significantly in the coming quarters’, said Coulling. ‘We are continuing to see the tablet market slowing down in less penetrated markets, where large smart phones are now replacing tablets and other devices for accessing the internet. Smart phones with screen sizes larger than 5.5-inches made up 31% of shipments in China. As this segment grows, tablets under 8-inches are declining and make up just 41% of the Chinese tablet market this quarter compared to 66% a year ago.’

Hybrid and convertible shipments doubled year-over-year in Q1 2015, reaching 3.0 million units. Asus headed the market with 28% market share, followed by Lenovo and Acer with 19%. The market for two-in-one devices is expected to continue to grow during 2015 as consumers become accustomed to new form factors. In addition, Windows 10 will provide a better user experience when switching between tablet and notebook modes on these devices.

A new version of Windows generally helps kick sales up a bit and MS is coming out with Windows 10.

Not as big a kick as in the old days when a new version of Windows meant you needed more memory, more CPU and more storage ... So they’re getting pretty low on the diminishing returns scale.

This says several things. The economy is not great. Everybody who is going to buy a PC has one. It’s not worth upgrading as you don’t get that much more. The newer software is annoying as heck and most people know it.

Yup. There is little point in getting a 4.5Ghz cpu when you havent maxed out a 3ghz yet. Or ram or whatever. My PC is a couple years old now and I can’t come close to redlining it with even high end music production software. The only thing that will do that is modded Skyrim/Games. I don’t forsee any upgrades for a long time. Just replacement if components fail.

Misleading headline not limited to politics. Headline says
global pc decline.

But reading further, we learn #1 company had a 16% decline while #2 and #3 companies had small increase.

Think of it in terms of politics. 16% less people voted for the Apple party than previously. The other parties had small increases in people voting for them. But a lot of people stayed home and did not vote.

That is much like the story of the 2014 election. I saw the well funded and massive Get-out-the-vote effort in GA for Michelle Nunn. In Oct 2014 I predicted a close Senate race based on the massive GOTV of the Dems.

In Oct 2014 I discounted the stories I heard of many Dems (mostly my Black neighbors in SW and SE Atlanta) who were piissed that they had to pay higher insurance premiums for higher deductibles and less choice of doctor.

Comparing 2010 and 2014 electon results precinct by precinct after the election, it became clear that many Dems (mostly Black) who voted in 2010 stayed home and did not vote in 2014 despite the massive organized GOTV of the Dems.

Taking this back to computer sales, people vote with their pocket book. There are reasons why there is a 16% decline in the vote for Apply while an increase in the #2 and #3 companies. The marketing teams of each company probably are looking at the numbers in detail by product, demographic and marketing campaign to determine what worked and what did not work...and hopefully learn from that history.

We in politics also need to learn from history...what works and what does not work.

The economy is not great.

Tell me. . . I got the Sunday Sacramento Bee this morning and it was so light, I thought it was a weekday version. It used to be the Bee was so full of advertising circulars you needed a hand truck to bring it in. . . this one practically floated in the door on its own.

You could save a fortune and have a neighborhood nerd build you one instead. Or build you a killer PC for the price of an average production comp. Win 7 was great. I’m hoping 10 is as well but I am in on hurry to upgrade. I fortunately milked XP till 7 and got to miss Vista.

Smartphones do so much that using a desktop CPU seems superfluous now. Too bad about the screen size.

But reading further, we learn #1 company had a 16% decline while #2 and #3 companies had small increase.

The leading company, Apple, had a 16% decline overall but that applied mostly because of the drop in only one segment, tablets, where all the others had even greater decline in the same category, if they participated at all, due to the extremely long replacement cycle of tablets and iPads. Other data from IDC and Garmin shows that in the desktop and notebook categories Apple increased its participation in those categories in the first calendar quarter of 2015.

Calalys is one of just two data companies that aggregates tablet computers into its data rather than treating them as a poor cousin of computers as do IDC and Garmin. As a result, it accurately reports that Apple sells more computers than any other maker in the world, but then, as a consequence, the decline in the tablet market more strongly effects Apple than it does the overall PC market in which most players are just not competing in the tablet computer market.

Dell made a conscious choice about five years (or more) back, to stop serving individual customers. They do not want your business. They are serving corporate and government customers now.

They stopped making custom builds, for example. You get what they offer. Period. And, of course, their website is people-unfriendly, as you observed.

I use mine to run 75 simultaneous porn videos on 75 separate monitors, for an immersive experience.

I redline all the time.

One word - Cloud. The Cloud will continue to grow. The means by which users access the cloud will be driven by any number of factors but computing power will not be one of them. There will still be certain applications that require the old computing model - hardcore gaming, heavy duty photoshop, video production, music production, but many other traditional tasks will be more and more cloud based. Imho.

Pretty much covers it in imo

I was thinking about this the other day as I pondered the loss of "keyboarding" (typing to us old farts) in the schools

Kids abbreviate crypto text these days and send stupid notes and photos to each other

The few serious ones can get pleasure only in hacking anything they can be challenged with

And I wondered ... where is it all headed ?

Could we possibly be forced to teach cursive as a medicasl excersize to reclaim mind/finger dexterity .... or perhaps have marble shooting as an olympic game ?

Mumbletypeg, anyone ?
