If you think the true meaning of Memorial Day is lost under the weight of barbecued hot dogs and burgers, a convenient way to honor those who’ve served in the armed forces would be to check out some of the movies in the TCM marathon airing Monday.

Here are some of the better choices, in chronological order:

9:15 a.m. “The Sand Pebbles” Steve McQueen stars as a naval engineer stationed in China who rescues a group of missionaries in 1926.

I have a question...what was the movie about the group of our soldiers in France that was featured. Am thinking band of brothers?

My local retro station Decades was running episodes of the TV show Rat Patrol.

Fantastic lineup, especially The Sand Pebbles. One of my favorite Steve McQueen performances. I’ve seen all the films except from Here to Eternity. I’ve caught bits and pieces of it, but never had the chance to sit down and watch it from beginning to end. Probably need to change that in the near future.

Yep....Liked it. I liked the BAR they used as well as trying to see if they used actual 1911s in the movie instead of 1911A1s. I think I saw one where it was a 1911, but that was solely looking at the full solid trigger.
