HBO programming chief talks 'True Detective' haters, 'Curb Your Enthusiasm's' fate

There are plenty that love/like it....But critics mostly panned it. And, sure, there's a legion of viewers (about 12 million per episode) still tuning in each week, but some do so to hate-watch.

HBO programming chief Michael Lombardo addressed the so-called haters Thursday at the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Beverly Hills.

...

"Here's what I think," he added. "I think Nic Pizzolatto is one of the best writers working in television and motion pictures today. I think he takes a big swing. All I can tell you is I think the show's ending is as satisfying as any show I've seen. And, look, much like all of our shows, I didn't believe this season or last season was intended for as big an audience as we're getting. I'm enormously proud of it. If [Nic] wanted to do another seasn, I told him our door is open. I would love to do another season with him. I think he is a spectacular writer."

...

" ...

And for all you "Curb Your Enthusiasm" fans, Lombardo indicated it's just a matter of time before the network's beloved curmudgeon will make his return.

"The last time I saw Larry [David] was right before his play ['Fish in the Dark'] premiered," Lombardo said. "He pulled out a little notebook and said, 'Know what this is? It's the next season.' ... I don't think it's out of his system. I think he wants to have something to say." But Lombardo added: "We have nothing planned for next year."

Season 1 was awesome. Season 2 was OK until midway, and now it’s getting good. Both started off slow, and I think people are forgetting that. I got high hopes for the end of this season.

Both are dark, filled with messed up people. It’s sort of an optimistic view of what broken people can do. You gotta be able to feel it.

This years True Detective has been an epic disaster of dumpster fire proportions. I wanted to like it, but they’re cramming way too many plot lines into it and the show becomes hard to follow. I want to like Thrones, but I avoid it due to the massive amounts of nudity.

OT, but I just have to state for the FR record how very, very sad I am that “The Comedians” was cancelled.

The first season of True Detective was electrifying. The second season is so boring, it doesn’t even make good background noise while I’m doing something else. Bah.

Almost nobody plays a self-centered, liberal asshole better than Larry David - and he isn’t even acting.

I tried to like the first season but I couldn’t get drawn in by McConaughey’s character. It wasn’t believable to me. All I kept thinking about was “ar’right, ar’right, ar’right”.

**For those who don’t know, it’s McConaughey’s tagline in some movie he did.

I still want to know what happens next, but at least for the first 4 episode I didn’t understand what is what as so many different things were going on at the same time. Might have been that I was rather drunk when I watched them, but after carefully calibrating I think I would have been confused even sober.

So what is happening? My (drunken) theory so far is that some rich Iraq f*ck got to America with his money and tries to blow up the chemical waste reservoir in that town creating a super sized dirty bomb.

What do you think about my “Iraqi kingpin did it” theory? Wouldn’t it be funny if I were right in the end!

It’s the Russian. Osip. Together with the corrupt state and corporate officials.

And the female AG seems a little too good to be true.

Bezzeride’s dad is the wild card. He has got to be in it up to his elbows somehow.

Maybe I should watch it again when I sober up. So far my suspects are

a) Iraqi kingping
b) Park ranger
c) Bar girl with scars
