Cryptonomnicon - Never heard of it.
Dune - Read it and liked it but have no desire to read the sequels.
Gravity's Rainbow - Never heard of it.
Foundation - Couldn't get into it.
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell - Never heard of it.
1984 - Read it and liked it.
First and Last Men and Starmaker - Heard of them but never read them. I found Stapledon difficult to read. I've finished only Odd John.

Dhalgren - Heard of it but never read it.
Infinite Jest - Never heard of it.

Read seven out of the ten. Gravity’s Rainbow was real hard going but I liked the rest. I’ll have to read the other three.

Since this is for fantasy as well as SF;
Imajica
Weaveworld
Both by Clive Barker.
A much better fantasy writer than horror writer, although I did enjoy the “Books of Blood”.

“Gravity’s Rainbow - Never heard of it.”
Awesome book! Great prose style. Some really funny stuff, and some fascinating oddball Nazi stuff I’d never heard of. Pynchon at his best!

I’m always leery of someone else’s opinion of what is “essential” to read. Of this list, several were (to me) virtually unreadable. I’ll like what I’ll like and that’s all what I’ll like.

"Cryptonomnicon - Never heard of it." One of my all-time favorite books. I usually reread it once a year now.
Sgt. Bobby Shaftoe is one of my all-time favorite literary characters! He alone is worth the time to read this novel.

The premise that everyone pretends to read fantasy books seems flawed.
Wouldn’t Lord of The Rings be on the list?

Thanks for posting. I’ve been looking around for recommendations and I’m sure there’ll be a few titles I’ll enjoy. I love Asimov and Heinlein.

The sequels to Dune don’t measure up, but the prequels written by Frank Herbert’s son are pure garbage. You would have to be seriously twisted to write something like that or enjoy reading it.

Any list that doesn’t contain “The Stars My Destination” is to be ignored.

One author that gets short shrift but who is one of the best is Jack Vance. His “Planet of Adventure” series is as good as scifi gets.
I also highly recommend “Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers” by Harry Harrison for a different view of space opera.
