This week, shoppers at Whole Foods in Brentwood, California spotted the new health drink, priced at $5.99 (£3.85) per bottle on the shelves. For just under four pounds, you got a bottle filled with water and three stalks of asparagus.
Was this the new maple water? Could Whole Foods get any more ridiculous? Are they becoming a parody of themselves? There were so many questions.
Alerted by bemused customers on Twitter, Eater called the store to investigate. They were initially told by an employee that the product was indeed new to the store. Weve had them on the shelf for the last few days, he said.
He elaborated: Its water, and we sort of cut asparagus stalks down so theyre shorter, and put them into the container.
Asked to what purpose, he clarified: Well, its to drink. The nutrients from the asparagus do transfer into the water.
Cue a barrage of WTAF on social media.
But, dont worry, it was all just an innocent mistake. Honest.
Whole Foods senior media relations specialist Liz Burkhart was quick to nip the whole thing in the bud overnight. We looked into this right away and found that this item was being carried in just one of our stores in California, she said.
It was meant to be water with the essence of vegetables and/or mushrooms to be used as broth (similar to a bone broth), which are typically made over a long period of time soaking in water. The product was made incorrectly and has since been removed from the one store where it was carried.
Phew. The world hasnt gone completely mad then. Or has it?
Has anyone tried coconut water? I think it tastes like b.o. I have never tasted b.o., but coconut water tastes just like I imagine it would taste. GROSS!
In other words, stinky body order sweat.
PT Barnum would be proud. There’s a sucker born every minute.
I don’t shop at whole foods. It’s too expensive and fru-fru for my relatively unsophisticated tastes. It would be nice to afford a $4 head of lettuce that listened to classical music as a seedling, but mac-n-cheese from a box sometimes has to do.
but is it sustainable
was it FREE RANGE.. asparagus???
the 5.99 price certainly seems to be in line with Whole Foods generally inflated pricing practices!
hmmm
my local market juts started selling Water....from Norway.....
allegedl;y from norway.
what does a gallon of water cost to ship from Norway to California?
why would anyone be willing to PAY for such an item?
Asparagus water certainly seems like a related item...
When I’m in the Philippines, I try a lot of crazy stuff. One was moonshine from coconut, I kid you not.
I thought I was drinking asparagus water and it turned out to be #$@&%*! asperger’s water.
It’s gross on its own, but I like in smoothies.
Coconut water tastes great IMHO, but is often overpriced in US markets.
I’ve had water fresh from green coconuts off the tree in the Caribbean, and I think it’s delicious.
Unfortunately, water from anything has been promoted to ridiculous prices, including, unfortunately at times, coconut water.
When I lived in Evart Michigan I saw a few people buying bottled water from right out of the ground.
More a case of trying to exploit the stupidity of some consumers.
Balute.
For extra credit, explain to the class what it is.
I was in whole foods recently, and was behind a man and woman in their forties, looked fit, (and probably both cheating), buy lunch for themselves. Two pre-packaged sushi lunches and two canned juices. I watched the register ring it up. Almost $25.
I once had brussels sprout steeped in Pink Floyd. For a short time, I understood the entire universe.
My cousin loves drinking Coconut water. I tried it once, almost puked, absolutely disgusting I dont know how people drink that stuff
What?
That’s probably the most incoherent, non-sequiter response I’ve ever gotten on this forum.
How dare they spend THEIR money like THEY want too.
Somebody ought to do something about that.
“Balute.”
It’s ‘BALUT’, no e’. Raw chick, boiled in the same egg..but damn delicious chick water. You make a small hole, drink the water and eat the whole chick raw...
Have you had “bayawak” or big lizard? In this province I go they have this large lizard population and they eat this bastards. yeah, it tastes like chicken and tastes better with “lambanog” or sugar cane MOONSHINE which is the best moonshine I ever tasted.
I actually agree. They can spend their money the way they want to.
Just ain’t my cup of tea, that’s all.
