The ten were chosen from 44 different powertrains that the judges examined; to be qualified, A new or significantly improved engine or propulsion system must be on sale in a production vehicle during the first quarter of 2014. The base price for the vehicle has been capped at $60,000, up from $55,000 last year. Here are the winning engines for 2014.
1. Audis 3.0 liter TFSI Supercharged V6 (S5) Audis fifth consecutive Best Engine appearance is owed to its new 3.0 liter supercharged V6, which offers 333 horsepower in the Audi S5. Several new [six cylinder] engines have entered the market within the past five years, but few can match the Audis brute strength, luscious torque and supreme refinement, Wards Auto says in its press release.
The price range leaves out many great engines that came out in 2014, but may have been 2015 models. Examples are Nissan GTR Nismo 3.8L Twin Turbo V6 AWD, 600 hp. Mercedes AMG GTS 4.0L Twin Turbo V8 2WD, (claimed 503 hp, but faster on track than some 600=700 hp cars).
It’s 2015, almost 2016.
Drove both, think I'm going with the BMW. The Audi had more muscle off the line but the BMW had a much better ride and felt more sure footed on the road. For a 4 cylinder direct injection 16 valve engine, it had plenty of power too. Was actually surprised it was a 4 cylinder.
It seems they gave time for reliability problems to be an issue.
My brother has an ecoboost V6 in his truck. He loves it. Power (and torque) when he wants it, decent MPG when he takes it easy.
I have a 2013 Audi S6 4.0L V8 Twin Turbo. Audi claims 420 hp, but the tuners with dynos claim it starts at 480 hp. Car and Driver clocked it at 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. It is really fast, but handles like a heavy car, around 4,400 lbs I think.
Looking at Porsche 911 Turbo and Mercedes AMG GTS. Maybe Nissan GTR.
Everyday driver car is 2013 Mercedes C300 4-matic. AWD for winter. crash safety and not so fast to retain DL.
I’m not switching from my AMG M156 for any of those. It’s beautiful.
Which car is that, C63 AMG?
“If you can afford a BMW, buy a Mercedes.” Old saying.
Why pay over-inflated prices for unreliable pseudo status symbols?
When you buy a high-end car, the dealers treat you well. When I had my Audi S6 in for service they gave me an Audi A8L for a loaner car, a $90-100K car.
Yeah, it’s the C63, a 2012.
Sounds a bit like the experience someone else had with the powerful Audi - it’s monster powerful, but you can tell it’s a heavy car.
The engine note is something else though.
My German cars have been pretty reliable. the 2013 Audi has had no down time. My commuter 2013 Mercedes is really a commuter car with over 100 miles each way from Boulder to Colorado Springs 2-5 times a week. Only problem was a worn front universal joint at 65,000 miles. Fixed free under 100,000 mile warranty and a 2015 C300 Mercedes loaner until it was fixed. It was not over priced IMO since it was over $30K, but under $40K.
I have a 2014 SQ5 which is great but I really want one of the euro-spec twin turbo TDIs. 479 ft-lbs torque and 33 mpg? Sweet.
The Audi switches from 4-cyl to 8-cyl turbo when you punch it. It goes from quiet to loud. I had an S-6 pass me and punch it about 1/2 mile ahead of me on the highway. It was loud with my windows up.
The C63 AMG are really fast too. I have run with them on the mountain roads where I live in Colorado and they uaually challenge me in my underclassed Mercedes C300. My mountain road is a favorite of Denver area soprts car drivers. I have run with almost everything in both my cars: Lotus of all types, Ford GT40 and GT. Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Gallardo and Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera, Nissan GTR, Vipers, etc.
The Mercedes C300 has the AMG suspension option and can keep up on the tight sections of road. The Audi can pretty much keep up, especially if in front and no passing sections :)
Bugeye Sprite, 948cc, twin SU carbs, 43 killer HP, bad to the bone. hehe
Their regular v6 is nice too.
The Audi is a wonderful car. I’ve driven my friend’s S4 V8 (without turbo), and that was awesome. I can only imagine what the S6 is like!
The C300 AWD I really like. In fact, that’s why I was in the Benz dealership when the guy showed me the C63. Love at first sight, or, perhaps, sound.
You get better sightings of supercars than I do! The only one I’ve gone up against is a 2014 Ferrari California on CA-24. Torque made the difference going from 50 to 110.
Like you, I’m looking at Porsche next. Maybe the 911GT3RS. Those are incredible, although the Carrera 4S is fun because of the AWD.
I recently picked up a 2015 Mercedes CLA250 and find the 2 liter turbo to be really nice. 208 horses/253 ft lbs torque 9at 1250 rpm) and averages 28.5 mpg locally and I expect 38-40 when I travel. It replaced a V-6 Camry with 268 ponies and is actually faster from 0-top end. The turbo is effective from 1200 rpm or so and it pulls hard through the range. It’s governed to top out at 133, but I expect it is capable of the 144 or so that the Camry was able to achieve (I never did that but saw postings on YouTube).
