Police in Sandusky said 45-year-old James Young of East Canton died after jumping a fence to retrieve some of his belongings. They had fallen while Young was riding the Raptor roller coaster.

Young was an Intervention Specialist for the 2014-2015 school years at the Louisville public schools. According to Michele Shaffer, superintendent of the district, he worked with students that needed extra help in reading and math. Shaffer told Fox 8 Young loved working as an intervention specialist and that his passion was to be a guidance counselor, which is what he received his master’s degree in.

Sounds as though he should have contacted the parks own “intervention specialist” to retrieve his belongings.

I’m sorry he’s gone, but what he did was incredibly dumb.

Sad, but certain places are called “restricted areas” for a reason. Did he ask an employee to stop the ride and retrieve his belongings?

I road this ride with my 12 year old 3 weeks ago. It was my first time back to the park since I was his his age.

Road the Blue Streak twice for old times sake.

Horrible way to go, but fences are there for a reason. When I rode trains to get just about anywhere in Japan, there were posters all over telling you so notify one of the station employees to retrieve something you dropped on the track.

They had those long grabby sticks. I'm guessing Cedar Point employees have something similar.

A cell phone is not worth risking your life for or the life of someone else . . . though I see plenty of people maneuvering through traffic with one hand due to cell phone prioritization.

You’d think he’d have learned from the last kid, who had his head punted off while trying to retrieve his hat. Which he no longer needs.

One thing that I have noticed over the past fifty some years is that many teachers believe that rules including the laws of nature do not apply to them. For instance my next door neighbor, a teacher was building a wooden fence he put the lower support 2x4s made of untreated fir directly on the ground. I suggested that he place them up at least a few inches. He said that he knew what he was doing. They rotted away within a few years.

Road the Blue Streak twice for old times sake.

That was the first ride where I saw somebody's face turn instantly green just before the first climb.

Is this a ride wherein the rider sits and dangles their feet?

Years ago this happened to a mexican at Great America in Santa Clara CA when he hopped the CLEARLY MARKED fence.

An innocent person suffered serious injury to their leg as it punted Jose’s skull across the parking lot.

IIRC the mexi’s family got zero dollars for his stupidity. Yay justice.

True. But with the ride being that low to the ground, you'd think it would have a fence no one could get through in those areas.

Ditto that. Cedar Point should not suffer loss as a result of this incredibly irresponsible behavior.

Want an interesting experience? Ride in a roller coaster's front-most seats.

People are always going to ignore any fence they want to ignore.

In my younger days, I would go into restricted areas on the bases I lived on by climbing over the fence with barbed wire on top.

I was young and stupid. But there are people of all ages who are stupid and do things like go around railroad crossing barriers and such.

Ya just can’t protect them all from themselves.

Seemed to work just fine with thousands and thousands of teens wandering around the ride for decades, until this grown adult man decided he was invincible.

I’m sorry he died also, but his death raised the IQ of every kid at that school by at least 5 points.

This guy is definitely in line for the non-coveted Darwin Award.
