Search teams have recovered the body of a missing hiker who was killed by a flash flood in Utah's Zion national park in Utah. The group, identified late Thursday, were washed away soon after they secured a permit to explore the canyon. The men and women were washed away on Monday afternoon. Search teams have found the body of a seventh hiker killed in a rain-swollen canyon of Utah's Zion National Park hours after the ill-fated group obtained a park permit to venture into that area despite forecasts of probable flash flooding, park officials said on Thursday.

I have been to Zion a couple times. Highly recommend. Lots of warnings about the danger of flash floods if you decide to explore the canyons.

Harsh price for taking a stupid risk, you should take a hard look at all the possibilities and be prepared. That being said the Forest Service should have never approved the permit with the predicted weather. But it's OK, it will be we taxpayers paying the huge settlements to the hikers families not the Forest Service personnel that issued the permit.

There are many slot canyons in national parks out west that are death traps during storms. Why those hikers went after being warned about storm activity is mystifying. Some people dare the fates.

Further, it does not have to be raining where you are at in order to have a flash flood. The rain storm can be several miles away and the water gets channeled by these slot canyons.

More people die each year from drowning each year versus tornados, lightening and hurricanes.

12 inches of fast flowing water will float and carry away most cars.

Imagine what that water can do to a human trying to stand in that fast current.

Years agoI hiked up that canyon.

For most of the time there is no trail and you must walk in the river, due to the walls being right at the river’s edge.

Speaking of abrasive: my filthy tennis shoes ended up brand new clean looking from all the tumbling rocks rubbing up against them.

Never have I been able to duplicate that cleanliness with a garden hose.
