freerepublic | November 13, 2015 | greeneyes

Posted on 11/13/2015 1:55:12 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings Gardeners. It's a beautiful sun shiny day here in Missouri. A bit nippy - in the 50s. I understand that rain is supposed to be on the way, and storms to the south and down into Texas, according to msn weather report.

Anyone know what Joe Bastardi says-please chime in. Yard and garden clean up continues. Lemons are almost ripe indoors. Mr. Basil of 5 years is done for - grown in a six inch pot and never transplanted.

It's been a hectic week, and I will have to leave shortly to pick up the great grand kids - together with the grand daughter I always bbsit, that's 4 kids all together for the last couple of days- good thing I have lots more energy these days. LOL

Hope all is well with you and yours. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Friday already! So the rain and the cold came in to central Texas which really didn’t matter because all that was in my garden was some tomato stems, a couple of half dead squash plants and a deal eggplant plant.

I go outside the other day to play with the pooch and looking into my garden I see 4 tomato plants, each one almost knee high. The eggplant is growing and in my other 4x4 melon plants have appeared. Given, no fruit will grow and they will eventually die, was just interesting to see.

Best wishes and health to all. Enjoy a great weekend.

EQ

That’s what I thought this summer when I saw a volunteer melon growing. I was surprised to have a tasty melon make it to maturity - 1st one in 5 years.

I saved those seeds, and will see if there can be a repeat this next summer. Hope springs eternal. LOL

Before our killing frost here in Massachusettts, we brought in two tomato plants. The smaller one is doing well, and my husband has it in front of a slider with a grow lamp on it. We have a very healthy flower blooming, and hope to see many more soon!

That’s great! I never got around to bringing in anything this year. May go ahead and start a couple of seeds for cherry tomatoes though.

My plan in middle winter is to start my seeds, using your advice. :)

Still coaxing the last tomatoes on the vine here in SW Pennsylvania. They are in pots.

I'll drag them inside tonight, tomorrow night and Sunday night due to frost danger. This is the 4th, 5th and 6th times this season. Then another week of mild weather before I give up and pick what's left since we have a week of normal frosty November weather forecast for Thanksgivng week.

Uncanny!

Wife and I recently obtained a cutting from "Crown of Thorns" cactus. We placed it in a glass of water for a week and now have moved it to a potting soil container.

It will remain indoors as the night-time temperature will move to the upper 20s for the next few months Midland TX, +2300 feet ASL.

Any recommendations for keeping it?

Also and for those who care, we have a Plumeria that is flowering since late September.

We will move it indoors for the cold-season but we are hoping it will continue to bloom. The scent is magnificent!

Oh those last few tomatoes are precious-the memory has to last till next season. That’s why I have visions of Greenhouses and plum size tomatoes dancing in my dreams this time of the year. LOL

Does anybody have experience running a CSA? I’m thinking about getting into that.

I have good news / bad news , especially for the folks in California, just seen today @KTLA :
NASA Climatologist: El Niño Has Arrived, Will Be ‘One Storm After Another Like a Conveyor Belt’
http://ktla.com/2015/11/13/el-nino-arrives-will-be-one-storm-after-another-like-a-conveyor-belt/

An interesting article which continues: "Based on the averages of sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific between August and October,
the current event ranked second to the powerful 1997 El Niño, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration."

Joe Bastardi's Weatherbell.com comes out tomorrow.
Bastardi already called for warmer than usual November , a seasonal December ,
and then hold onto your socks and long-johns or the next three months, as I recall.
Will advise of Joe Bastardi's Saturday Summary, if I can get it; sometimes successful/ sometimes not !

Leaves are falling, so I will be tilling them into the garden plot soon.

My Big Question is about pine needles.
I have a large pine tree out back that drops a prodigious amount of needles each year.
They are nice and brown and cover the ground to the point of killing the grass.
I usually rake them up and dispose of them.

Would it be okay to add them to the garden along with the pecan leaves or do they need to be left out longer?

I had also thought about leaving them in a pile until next year and using them between rows in the garden to keep down grass and weed growth.
Hoping to find a used bagger for the mower so I can use grass clippings as well.

Any information and ideas are gratefully appreciated.

Approach it carefully, while tending it? I don’t have much experience with Cacti, and keep my distance from plants with thorns as a general rule.

It looks like it’s doing well-just don’t overwater it is about all I can tell you.
